help c-files etc.!!!

Postby Susy2 » 28 Nov 2008, 15:43

Hello,
If I understood it right the c-file number is the number of the certificate of naturalization (?). I've done some research at ancestry.com and I found a sort of card of my ancestor saying that the number of certificate is 4679131. I've tried to enter this number as the C-file number online at USCIS. They ask me to join a letter with my C-file number. I don't know this letter. Ancestry says that "this number (without a letter) is the number required for requesting the naturalization file fron USCIS while USCIS says it's not sufficient. What should I do? Should I simply put a "C" in front of my number?
Could you please also inform me if the date of naturalization is the same as the "date certificate issued"?
Thank you :)

The C# numbers ran from 1906 to 1956 while the A numbers ran from 1956 onward. The C# for naturalization Records consisted of Declaration of Intent, Petition for Naturalization, Certificate of Arrival and the actual Naturalization certificate. The C numbers formerly were written directly onto the ships manifest since by law it was mandated that their arrival had to be checked.

Hi Peter, thank you for your answer. The C file is listed from 1939. You can also see it at http://www.footnote.com/search.php?quer ... =2&number=
100&nav=4294966901
If you click on the image you can see on the right side the number 4679131. Ancestry says "this number (without a letter) is the number required for requesting the naturalization file fron USCIS "
http://blogs.ancestry.com/circle/?p=2835 ). My problem is that while I'm requesting the naturalization documents online at USCIS, they tell me to put a letter with my C-file number but I don't know this letter. Should I only write a "C" in front of "my" number 4679131. Or How could I get the complete number?
Thank you for your help

Dear Susy2 I would use the letter "C" and see what happens since there are no other letters save for the "C" and the "A" file letters unless you know of other letters that preceed file numbers? =Peter=
