looking for great grandfather

Over 25 million Italians have emigrated between 1861 and 1960 with a migration boom between 1871 and 1915 when over 13,5 million emigrants left the country for European and overseas destinations.

looking for great grandfather

Postby greg.s » 10 Mar 2009, 09:30

Hi. My name is greg and I'am looking for any information on my late great grandfather. Giuseppe Salerno from Guardavalle. He emmigrated to the USA. And never came back. We know he went to live with his brother Antonio in Oneida New York ( Catherine Street ). He was still at that address in the 1930 census, and I know he died in 1969, my father would like to visit his grave but we dont know where he is burried.

Dear greg.s,

I looked for Giuseppe and Joseph Salerno, d 1969, in Oneida, Madison, NY.

I found nothing in 1969 for Giusepppe.

For Joseph I found the following - nothing in Oneida
Joseph Salerno 13 Jun 1904 Feb 1969 White Plains, Westchester, New York
Joseph Salerno 15 May 1878 Jul 1969 Jamaica, Queens, New York
Joseph Salerno 21 May 1913 Jun 1969 no town given

For Antonio Salerno:

Name: Antonio Salerno
SSN: 888888888888
Last Residence: New York
Born: 4 Nov 1889
Died: Sep 1963
State (Year) SSN issued: New York (1951)

Anthony Salerno 14 Jun 1914 May 1984 Utica, Oneida, New York

Birth dates for both would narrow the search.

Hope this helps

Go to the following site and search for the exact phrase Giuseppe Salerno.
http://www.fultonhistory.com/Fulton.html

One of the hits will be for an Oct 1968 obituary from the Utica Observer which lists wife's name, children's names, a short bio, and burial information.

This appears to be the same peson as the Social Security record Laura posted. Problem is birthplace is shown as Bagheria.

Another possibility. I did locate Giuseppe's 1906 ship manifest and it shows his year of birth as approx. 1878 so one of gnana's finds is a possible. Thanks to Da Kid.

Thanks guy's it seems that my great grandfather arrived in the US
JUN 22, 1906 according to ships records at ellis island, it shows his year of birth as 1978, and it also states that he went to visit his brother antonio in Utica. I'll try to get his correct date of birth and post it.

Hello!
Just for reference, a possible 1920 census on Catherine Street.
If this is the correct family, the names appear to match the 1968 obituary that Biff found.
In April 1930 the family was listed on the census at 532 Blandina Street

(click here) 1920 census page 1
page 2

Home in 1920:
410 Catherine Street
Utica Ward 1, Oneida, New York
Joseph Salerno 40
Catherine Salerno 32
John Salerno 10
Phillip Salerno 7
Anthony Salerno 5
Vincent (James in 1930) Salerno 7/12

I thought I should post these manifests because there were a number of Giuseppe and Antonio Salerno's who emigrated to Utica.

1906 manifest for Giuseppe Salerno from Guardavalle line 11
Approx yob 1878, married
Destination Utica to join brother Antonio at 90 Catherine St

1900 manifest for Giuseppe di Giovanni Battista Salerno from Bagharia line 24
Approx yob 1878, single
Destination Utica to brother Antonio at 53 ? Avenue
Travelling with cousin Giuseppe di Vincenzo Salerno who is also going to Utica, line 25

Uh, oh--three different Giuseppe Salerno's who emigrated to Utica, and two Antonio's.

I believe that Giuseppe di Giovanni Battista is the same person as the obituary posted and the same person as the 1920 census and 1930 census with wife Catherine and children John, Phillip, Anthony and Vince/James.

Greg.s--can you post the image of the 1930 census which shows your Giuseppe Salerno living with brother Antonio?
