proof of naturalization

Over 25 million Italians have emigrated between 1861 and 1960 with a migration boom between 1871 and 1915 when over 13,5 million emigrants left the country for European and overseas destinations.

proof of naturalization

Postby dragoni » 20 Apr 2009, 22:53

i could use some assistance. i have contacted the local and state courts where my greatgrandfather, who emigated here in 1901, resided to see whether he became naturalized. neither of those courts could find any record of his naturalization. how should i address my inquiry to the us customs office to see whether he was natualized? my grandfather was born in 1904 and i want to use my greatgrandfather's failure to naturalize before that date as the basis for my italian citizenship. thanks

Did you try www.footnote.com? . First give it a name check (usually free of charge and see if he is listed). =Peter=

Hi Tom,

If you don't find the records using Peter's excellent suggestion, you can try these.

NARA has some records for the federal courts. Are you near a NARA office. Try there. http://www.archives.gov/locations/

The USCIS will give you the definitive answer, one that you can take to the consulate. But it costs something. The details are here: http://www.uscis.gov/portal/site/uscis/ ... 18190aRCRD

(No, I don't know why they need such a long URL.)

Good luck with your search.

Jerry

The USCIS only has records starting on 9/27/1906 to April 1,1956 but www.footnote.com has some scattered records for NY and some other states for prior 1906. You may wish to go to NARA at www.archives.gov/genealogy/naturalization =Peter=
