Finding Family

Over 25 million Italians have emigrated between 1861 and 1960 with a migration boom between 1871 and 1915 when over 13,5 million emigrants left the country for European and overseas destinations.

Finding Family

Postby nmucci » 04 Sep 2009, 15:44

I am looking to find out exactly where my great grandparents came from in Sicily.

My great grandmother Vitala Miceli and her parents came to Boston in 1906. Her father was Vitale Miceli and her mother was Maria A. Pelletieri.

My great grandmother married my great grandfather in 1911 in Boston, Salvatore Scimeca.

Vitala was born in 1891. We believe they(the Miceli's) were from Comune di Castronovo in Sicily. How do I verify this information?

I am hoping to get a hold of her birth certificate in Italy, what is the best way to obtain that?

Hello!
Often the comune can be found on some US records: Ship manifests (after about 1907), 1917-8 and 1942 Military Draft Registration cards, Naturalization paperwork (after abt 1906), and sometimes birth, marriage or death records
Have you found all of your family's US documents?
Thanks!
Valarie

This is the possible arrival manifest for Vitala Miceli:

Date of arrival April 28, 1907
Vitala Miceli age 16 (aprox year of birth 1891), single, last residence and place of birth Castronovo going to Boston MA to join her father Nicolò? :?

from Ellisisland.org: (name is mispelled in Nitala Miceli)

http://www.ellisisland.org/EIFile/popup ... &line=0025

She was travelling with her Aunt (she's listed as niece) Serafina Cirrito...

Hope this helps!
