Requesting Birth Certificate

Over 25 million Italians have emigrated between 1861 and 1960 with a migration boom between 1871 and 1915 when over 13,5 million emigrants left the country for European and overseas destinations.

Requesting Birth Certificate

Postby JScanio » 24 Sep 2009, 02:26

Hi,

I have a question regarding the request letter for the Birth Certificate from Sicily.

What is the correct name for the certificate to request?

On Circolo it states: “estratto dell’atto di nascita.â€

I asked for "Estratto integrale dell'Atto di Nascita di XXX", and they sent me a photocopy of the actual birth record, with all the necessary stamps that indicated it was an official copy.

Good luck!
Jerry

I requested "un estratto per riassunto dell'atto di nascita (copia integrale in carte legale)" from two comunes. I didn't receive anything that looked super official. After reading jwazevedo's post about a photocopy of the actual record, I am now questioning whether they would suffice or not. They have stamps and signatures.

For some reason I couldn't upload a PDF and the ZIP file of less than 400k was not allowed, said too large. :(

Here is a link to the PDF of two Italian birth certificates.

Please feel free to take a look and let me know what you think. Are these the correctly formatted birth certificates and will be acceptable at the consulate? Much appreciated.

I would also put out a general call for others to post some of their documents, redacted if necessary, to serve as examples and guidance for others. :)

The document you uploaded is typical of what comes from many smaller comuni and will be fine for a jure sanguinis application.

Thank you for checking out the documents. Both documents, on both pages are hand written in some template. I am relieved that they will work. I hope the examples will also help others.

I have a question-I have sent two requests to the birth and marriage records office in Montemesola and it has been over 1 month with no response. I have typed out a letter in Italian with my request with names of my GGF and GGM (maiden name) along with approx. birth dates and location of their marriage. I am also sending this with approx. $10 in IRC's. Do I need to to send them any copies of any birth certificates, etc. of my grandfather or show any lineage along with the letter of request and IRC's?

From what I'm told, this is a normal wait. There is no need to send proof of lineage. You probably should not have sent any money either, as they do not usually require this from out-of-country requests. But, what can you do about it now?
My Italian surnames:

Caserta: Maietta, Rossano, Tessitore, Negro, Peluso, Musone

Campobasso: D'Andrea, Barile

Catanzaro: Fiorelli/Fiorillo, Romito

Oh, well, nothing like a little postal money to help grease the cogs of the wheel I guess...:)
