Need help finding the right manifest

Over 25 million Italians have emigrated between 1861 and 1960 with a migration boom between 1871 and 1915 when over 13,5 million emigrants left the country for European and overseas destinations.

Need help finding the right manifest

Postby DeFilippis78 » 12 Apr 2010, 12:32

I dont need the manifest for citizenship because this is a different line but just for my family tree in general. Ive looked before but am having a hard time pin pointing the right manifest. There are many people that have his criteria. Maybe someone here with more experience will have an easier time figuring out which man is the right one :)

Giuseppe Paonessa
Born December 1879
Single (he married here in 1908)
Arrived around 1905 or 6
Born in Gimigliano, Catanzaro, Calabria

I have everything else on him. Im only lacking the right manifest. Can you help? I have a subscription to Ancestry and I check Ellis island and steve morse but there are many matching him. Too many to list here.

Hi Alicia,

Where did he live in the States? In what state did he marry? When you say you have everything else, do you mean 1910, -20 and -30 Censuses, WWI and WWII registration cards?

Yes I have all that you listed. He lived in the Bronx, North Bergen, NJ and died in Los Angeles. He married in Manhattan in 1908.

Best bet looks like the 1899 manifest, SS Trojan Prince, arriving NY on 27 September
Line 22
Giuseppe Paonessa, 20, shoemaker, from Gimigliano

Did Giuseppe have a brother Saverio? If yes, they are both on a manifest for 1906. (SS Calabria, arriving 7 October to NY) Saverio is married and 21, Giuseppe is single and 25, and both are blacksmiths from Catanzaro. They are going to New York to Luigi Carracciolo who is brother in law of Giuseppe (a sister's husband?)

I think the 1899 manifest might be too early. On all the censuses it was an arrival date of 1905 or 1906. But Ill take a look at at.

Im not sure about Saverio. He had a brother Domenico but he came at a later time. Is this the manifest that says they are going to Newton Hook? I saw one for Newton Hook but thats in a different state. Let me go take a peek.

Thanks for your time. I also am trying to figure out the right one also because Im going to Ellis Island in a few days and want all the right info to look in their databases on site. I have tons of ships to look up when Im there but none for Giuseppe :(
