Passenger List

Over 25 million Italians have emigrated between 1861 and 1960 with a migration boom between 1871 and 1915 when over 13,5 million emigrants left the country for European and overseas destinations.

Passenger List

Postby Marianna620 » 07 Jul 2010, 15:32

I am trying to find a Passenger List for the Canopic that docked in Boston on May 16, 1911. I am trying to find information on my Great Grandfather Angelo Damiano. He migrated from Bucciano, Benevento and ended up in Providence, Rhode Island. I was able to find a WWI draft registration card on him, but then the trail turns cold.

My family always said he was buried in Potter's Field. but I called, the Bureau of Vital Statistics and they could not find any Death Certificate for him between 1918 - 1930.

Hi!
Here is the Canopic manifest page from ancestry. com
note:
- the May 1911 ship manifest images on ancestry are mislinked
- this page was 93 of 152 for the Franconia
- page 2 wasn't included

Well, I have good news and bad news...

It appears that the film indexes are messed up. I can find this record on Ancestry . com, but when I try to view the manifest, it comes up an entirely different ship, the Franconia.

Okay, I thought to myself, how about if I look at the Franconia manifest instead? Sure enough, the Franconia is listed as arriving in Boston on that same date, however when I begin paging through the manifest, the first 30-something pages are for a ship named Zeelander or some such. Continuing to browse the pages though I do eventually reach the Canopic and, on ancestry's page 93 of the film, I found the first half of Angelo's manifest. He is on line 5 in the image below.

The bad news is, the film seems to be missing most of the right-side-of-the-book pages, so many of Angelo's key facts are missing - birthplace, who going to see in the US, etc.

My suggestion would be to try speaking with an archivist at the National Archives (www.archives.gov) and see what they think about locating the rest of this manifest.

Here's a 1919 Directory for Providence from footnote. com
(information proabably gathered in 1918)
http://img203.imageshack.us/img203/4012 ... idence.jpg

Angelo Damiano is at 70 Veazie Street working on Admiral St
Can't find him in another Providence Directory

Were his children born in Italy or the US?
Where did they live?

Thank you, Valarie
