Finding Funeral Home

Over 25 million Italians have emigrated between 1861 and 1960 with a migration boom between 1871 and 1915 when over 13,5 million emigrants left the country for European and overseas destinations.

Finding Funeral Home

Postby nagnello » 23 Sep 2010, 01:35

I am looking for my G-grandmothers death cert. I have tried lots of different spellings, etc. One suggestion was the funeral home where she was prepared for burial. In her obit. it only gives an address from 1955. How can I find out more about this place with no name?

FYI- She was born in 1859 in Sicily and died July 9, 1955 in Chicago. Have not located her death cert. I have all census records, etc.

If she is not a direct-line ascendant, you will almost certainly not need her death certificate (or birth certificate).

Have you checked with the cemetery ("St. Josephs")? Their records should indicate the name of the funeral home, I would think.

Also, I don't know how old you are, but "MOhawk 4-5150" is old-style telephone number where the first two digits of the telephone number were indicated by an "exchange" name. Replacing the MO with the digits found for those letters on a telephone keypad, the number becomes 664-5150. From 1947 until 1988, all of Chicago had just one area code, 312.

Googling 312-664-5150, believe it or not, comes back to:

Lucania Funeral Home
6901 W. Belmont Avenue
312-664-5150

Now, that's what I call Research with a capital R! :)

thanks for all the hints, I tried the funeral home but the number has been disconnected. I tried the cemetery again, and many of the funeral homes that were in the Near North side of Chicago are no longer there.

I don't know if you have seen this: http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cg ... 40&df=all&

Perhaps the creator, Nina Agnello, has additional information?

Did you mean you tried to locate the cemetery again, or tried to contact it again? From findagrave.com, here is the contact info for the cemetery:

St Joseph Cemetery
3100 North Thatcher Avenue
River Grove IL 60171-1099
Phone: 708-453-0184

Very interesting. In 1958, it definitely belonged to Lucania Funeral Home:

Currently, there is a skin care center at 409 West North Avenue, ant the previously mentioned Belmont Avenue address is some 10 miles away. Still, worth looking into for the Lucania connection.

PS: Googling "lucania funeral home" news from the 1950's turns up a few interesting hits: http://www.google.com/search?um=1&hl=en ... 0bee2047fa
