Background/Credit check?

Over 25 million Italians have emigrated between 1861 and 1960 with a migration boom between 1871 and 1915 when over 13,5 million emigrants left the country for European and overseas destinations.

When applying for citizenship, jure sanguinis, does anyone know if the Italian government performs background/credit checks on the applicants?

Absolutely not.

A mind adjustment is in order: you are not applying for Italian citizenship. You are presenting proof that you are and always were an Italian citizen under Italian law.

In theory, you could be a mass murderer sitting on death row; if you can present a compelling jus sanguinis case, you cannot be denied.

The situation is quite deifferent however for jus matrimonio cases, where things like criminal background checks, etc, come into play.
