NYC CONSULATE ASKED FOR NON DIRECT LINE CERTIFICATES!

Over 25 million Italians have emigrated between 1861 and 1960 with a migration boom between 1871 and 1915 when over 13,5 million emigrants left the country for European and overseas destinations.

NYC CONSULATE ASKED FOR NON DIRECT LINE CERTIFICATES!

Postby sceaminmonkey » 30 Nov 2010, 03:31

so I put it in my appointment recap post but I wanted to give fair warning. The Gentleman at the NYC consulate on november 26th DID ASK FOR CERTIFICATES IN THE NON DIRECT LINE. he asked for my GGM birth and my GM birth as well as my fathers. I do not know why. he asked after reviewing my GGF marriage record. there was not a reason I could tell to prompt him to ask he just did. I mention this because everyone keeps saying they would not ask and I was even advised to not get them by certain people. I am glad I did because they asked. So go prepared as most people will tell you.

Where are you great grandparents from, meaning what part of Italy?

Well, they didn't ask for my indirect line so just trying to narrow down what they might be thinking, although I didn't go through New York.

From where do you think they would be prejudice to? And why? Just curious now

Every case is different. Perhaps they saw something that might not be air tight for whatever reason. I don't think any prejudice is involved.

From what I've read, they usually ask for non direct certificates just in case the direct line has issues they are concerned with. I agree with Jennabet, no prejudice seems to have occured.

Perhaps the request for documents from outside your direct-line had something to do with the DOB discrepancies in your ancestor's naturalization papers. If someone presents a case with errors, additional documentation may be requested for clarification - this is normal. Applicants should anticipate this, especially in NYC.

Along with all of the above, it is entirely possible that if you had said, "I am sorry; I don't have those documents..." the reply might have been, "Okay; no problem."

The same with translations of documents other than the applicant's own. In the past, NYC has not required translations of ancestor's birth/marriage/death certificates.

Carmine brins up a good point. Were the non direct documents kept by the interviewer or just looked at?

Yes he kept them and I want to be clear. At the time he asked for non direct certificates he had no discrepancies brought to his attention. At the time he asked for my ggm certificate Everythig was ok!
