Help locating ship manifests

Over 25 million Italians have emigrated between 1861 and 1960 with a migration boom between 1871 and 1915 when over 13,5 million emigrants left the country for European and overseas destinations.

Help locating ship manifests

Postby rjrdomer » 04 Jan 2011, 18:21

Friends on this forum have been very helpful and found a manifest of my g-g grandmother. This is the first manifest I've ever been able to locate of hers.

It is dated in 1905. Lines 20-22. Concetta D'Elia is her maiden name. Her married name was Russo, as it says she was going to see her husband Cono Russo in Brooklyn. Her two sons were Vincenzo (James) and Giovanni (John) Russo, but traveled as D'Elia with her.

On the manifest it says she was in the United States several times, 1887, 1891, 1897...I think the last two dates are 1891 through 1897 but I cannot seem to find any other manifests with her name on it for her other trips. The two kids listed with her are US citizens as they were born in the US.

Anyone have any thoughts? She likely would have traveled with children. Her kids' names were:

Antonio b. 1887
Vito b. 1889
Vincenzo (James) b. 1892
Giovanni (John) b. 1896

Her husband was Cono Russo and they were from Teggiano (Tegiano), Italy and lived in Brooklyn, New York. Any thoughts or insight would be appreciated.

The problem with early manifests is that it is so difficult to know if you have the correct person - there is so little useful information on them.

This one, for example:

New York Passenger Lists, 1820-1957 about Concetta Elia
Name: Concetta Elia
Arrival Date: 30 Oct 1885
Birth Year: abt 1865
Age: 20
Gender: Female
Ethnicity/Race/Nationality: Italian
Place of Origin: Italy
Port of Departure: Naples, Italy
Destination: New York
Port of Arrival: New York
Port Arrival State: New York
Port Arrival Country: United States
Ship Name: Alesia
