Need Some Help with Immigration

Over 25 million Italians have emigrated between 1861 and 1960 with a migration boom between 1871 and 1915 when over 13,5 million emigrants left the country for European and overseas destinations.

Need Some Help with Immigration

Postby PunzoNewHaven » 27 Jan 2011, 21:38

Hi, I thought I had it, my ggf's trip from Italy here. Well, I now found after weeks that in New Haven there were 2 Catello Punzo (Ponzo's) one born in Jan. 1886 in Italy (not my Catello) and one born Jan. 1884 he is the right one, I can tell from his WWI reg. card, his address and wife are correct.
Now I cannot find him on the Ellis Island Passenger Lists! I thought he came over on the Aller, but that Catello was 12, and was born in 1886.

Any hints as to how I can find my Catello coming over, it doesn't come up

Also Vincenzo and Guilia were the other Catello's parents, so I am back a whole generation.

Hi Johnny,

Yes, that card is my Catello, but Guilia is the other Catello's mother. The only way I figured it out was by the address, on my gf's birth ceritificate it says Collis St. as does the card you found, the other family lived in a different section of NH, Hamilton St. at the same time, I didn't realize two Catello's were two years apart with the same last name. And the other Catello, the one whose mom is Guilia's wife is not right either.
Any way I can find his immigration record? All this time I had the wrong one!

Thank you!

Beth

The Catello born Jan. 1886 in Italy and imm. in 1898
http://www.ellisisland.org/EIFile/popup ... &line=0011
joining at father Salvatore Gargano ( stepfather) in New haven CT
is listed in 1900 census as Catello Gargano

1900 United States Federal Census
about Catello Cargano Name: Catello Cargano
[Catello Corgan]
Home in 1900: New Haven, New Haven, Connecticut
[New Haven, New Haven, Connecticut]
Age: 14
Birth Date: Jan 1886
Birthplace: Italy
Race: White
Gender: Male
Immigration Year: 1898

Household Members: Name Age
Sahatora Cargano 42
Lguca Cargano 38
Francesco Cargano 17
Catello Cargano 14
Cansaela Cargano 4

and I believe no doubts that the ship's manifest of 1898 is abt this Catello , becoming Gargano in 1900 census....
The other Catello that i found:
1900 United States Federal Census
about Catillo Ponzo Name: Catillo Ponzo
[Catello Pozo]

also if the birthdate is jan 1886, I believe that is your Catello, because some error is normal on the censuses; what it is interesting, is the immigration year: 1895
and in the 1900 census appearing also Mariano brother of Vincenzo.. well this Mariano travelled again in USA
http://www.ellisisland.org/EIFile/popup ... &line=0006
and joining at Vincenzo Ponzo in New Haven; coming from Castellammare di Stabia...
I apologize if you have already made this search, sorry I no read all your topics, but you can say me the your Catello parent's names...?

I had a similar Connecticut Court of Common Pleas naturalization record I was looking for in my own family. I contacted the court and they told me that all of these records had been turned over to the National Archives. I contacted the National Archives and they said that they found the record but, in fact, it did not contain any information beyond what was on the index card; the "records" nothing more than a log book of sorts.

Of course, your results might be different.

Dear Susan,

Thank you. The first Catello you found I thought was "my" Catello. But my ggf Catello was born in 1884, the image that is on this page that the gentleman was kind enough to post for me is him/ his naturlization is correct, that's him, his wife's name was Louise (Proto) Punzo, this is per my gf's b.cert. Though for Catello's first name it lists George and they spelled the last name Ponzo. Odd for a b. cert. in the US to be wrong like that? Though my father confirms that they called him George and that is why my dad's middle name is George, after Catello.

I cannot find a Catello or George Ponzo or Punzo born in 1884 coming to the US. I know he was born in Italy. I don't know his parent's names. Wish I did.

The second record you found is the other Catello, his wife is Raffaele by his Naturlization papers, so I know Vincenzo and Guilia are not his parents. (My Catello) plus the address is wrong.

Question, if the first one is my Catello and the birth year is wrong for some reason, he did not go by Gargano, he went by Punzo (sometimes spelled Ponzo) is that possible? All of his children and we, are Punzo's.
Thank you so much for your work!!!!!

ok, it is a mystery; I cannot find in 1900 census your Catello( born in 1884) but by 1930 census seeming arrived in USA in 1895... so he was abt 11 old; the father maybe was named Salvatore as the Catello first son... that is possible... I searched so much and I cannot find the arrival... but a child, 11 old... travelled with parents... or some relative.... you found 1900 census of your Catello?

No, I haven't found the 1900 census, but you are right about Salvatore, my gf was their first son! I will try that angle, maybe they spelled it really wrong?

Susan!
That is them! They lived on Collis Street. I spent 4 hours last night spelling Punzo so many different ways! You are wonderful! It is missing their other son Frank (Francis) but I know all of the other names are right!
Thank you so so much!

Does this help at all with finding Catello's parents?

Hi maybe Frank Punzo is not in the 1920 census because he born after 18 Jan 1920( date census)? it is possible .... Frank seeming born around 1920/1 ( by 1930 census)...
No clues abt Catello parent's... the first child Salvatore( Solly) most probably have the first name of Catello's father...
I hope to find also 1910 census...
all the best,
