Selvitella, Selvitello, Selvitelli, Salvitella

Over 25 million Italians have emigrated between 1861 and 1960 with a migration boom between 1871 and 1915 when over 13,5 million emigrants left the country for European and overseas destinations.

I'm trying to locate the immigration and naturalization records for Luigi Selvitella (I've found this spelled a million different ways). On the 1910 census Luigi says he came to the US in 1882 and was naturalized but I can find no record of it. He married Celeste "Esther" Caggiano probaly about 1882-1885). I don't know if he married her in the US or in Italy. They had 15 children but only 9 were alive in 1910. They settled in Boston. Luigi's parents were Sebastiano And Teresa (Penta) Selvitella (this is from Luigi's death record). He was born in 1862 in Italy and died in 1911 in Boston. They had the following children: Antonio, Benigno (Benjamin) Maria Theresa, Sebastian, Maria Anna, Jenny, Luigi (Louis), Alesandro, Arigo, Carlo, Henry, Gennaro (Jerry). Anyone know anything about this family?

Hi,
I believe that the surname spelling is Selvitella; the other Selvitellas ( Carmine/Carmen, Francesco/Frank, Alessandro) in Boston coming from Taurasi town, Avellino province, IT;
I believe that also your Luigi was born in Taurasi;
also Caggiano surname is very popular in Taurasi...
I believe that this is the arrival:
New York Passenger Lists, 1820-1957
about Lenzie Serritella
Name: Lenzie Serritella ( Luigi Selvitella)
Arrival Date: 3 May 1883
Birth Year: abt 1862
Age: 21
Gender: Male
Place of Origin: Avellino,Italy

Port of Departure: Messina, Sicily and Palermo, Italy
Destination: United States of America
Port of Arrival: New York
Port Arrival State: New York
Port Arrival Country: United States
Ship Name: Archimede

In a passport abt Frank Selvitella, resident in Boston, Ma:

U.S. Passport Applications, 1795-1925
about Francisco Selvitella Name: Francisco Selvitella
Birth Date: Nov 1864
Birth Place: Taurasi, Italy
Age: 45
Residence: Boston, Massachusetts
Passport Issue Date: 15 Nov 1909
Passport Includes a Photo: No

this Frank said that arrived in USA on 18 apr 1883, Archimede ship; so declared on the passport;
now because the Archimede ship surely arrived in USA on 3 May 1883( Luigi arrival), and the trip was abt 20 days, so it is impossible that the Archimede ship going to and from Italy from 18 apr 1883 to 3 May 1883; so I believe that this Frank arrived on other ship and most probably he was a brother of your Luigi....

by LDS microfilms:
Registri dello stato civile di Taurasi (Avellino), 1809-1910 Taurasi (Avellino). Ufficio dello stato civile
Births, marriages, banns, deaths, miscellaneous documents, ten year indexes, citizenship records of Taurasi..

I believe that your Luigi was born around 1862 and not in 1864 as in naturalization record:
U.S. Naturalization Record Indexes, 1791-1992 (Indexed in World Archives Project) about Luigi Selvitella
Name: Luigi Selvitella
Birth Date: 10 Oct 1864
Birth Place: Italy
Age at event: 32
Court District: Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Vermont
Date of Action: 13 Sep 1897

So my advice is that searching in Taurasi microfilms you can find Luigi Selvitella birth act...
hoping helpful,
