Over 25 million Italians have emigrated between 1861 and 1960 with a migration boom between 1871 and 1915 when over 13,5 million emigrants left the country for European and overseas destinations.

WWI Draft Card Info-how to find it?

Postby bojickwoman » 27 Oct 2011, 17:57

My great-grandfather served in WWI for Italy and I have no idea where I can find his draft card. I have pictures of him in his uniform, but no info to go along with the pictures.

Savino Roppolo
b. 1907 in Perosa, Italy
d. 1984 in Chicago, IL

If someone can point me in the right direction, that would be great! I've gotten good info on here in the past that has helped me piece the family history together, but there are still missing pieces of the puzzle I'm trying to find. Any help is appreciated!

It is possible that he was born in Perosa Argentina ( full name of a italian town in Torino province, Piedmont) and not in Argentina country really?? In Italy it are this places with Perosa name:
Perosa Argentina Torino (TO) Piemonte
Perosa Canavese Torino (TO) Piemonte
Villar Perosa Torino (TO) Piemonte
Perosa frazione di Demonte Cuneo (CN) Piemonte

Yes, he was born in Perosa Argentina, Italy in the Piedemont region. The info you have should be the same person. I know sometimes there are mistakes on spelling and details in some of these old records.

Also, on some documents I have it is listed that his birth year is 1900 and on some it is listed as 1907. Not sure which is correct. I've also been told that he was never quarrantined at Ellis Island because they thought he was from Argentina in South America instead of Italy. This has been passed down orally in my family. I'm not certain if it is true or not. The family also stated that he went AWOL in WWI.

hmmm... I cannot find the arrival of your ancestor; I found a Sabino RAFFALO ( name inverted as Raffalo SABINO) born in 1900 arrived in USA on Jun 23, 1922; coming from Perosa Canavese, father Don RAFFALO in Perosa Canavese, joining at Martin(Martino) RAFFALo Ture Restaurant 6912 Cottage Grove, Chicago Illinois; born in Argentina, General Roca place :

I am pretty sure that the surname is wrong on the ship's manifest, because really Martin Raffalo( where Sabino going) is Martin/Martino Roppolo and lived in Pennsylvania until 1921 and after moved in Chicago IL;

that for to say, that maybe Perosa Argentina was not the birthplace or residence place, but Perosa Canavese is more probable if the ship's manifest is right as I think, and also the birthdate is 10 nov 1900... so let me know your suggestions abt this search, so I can help better you for the military record in Torino Archive...

all the best,

Thank you! I believe the information you found is correct. It is possible he was born in Perosa Canavese instead of Argentina. That makes sense. I DO know his brother is Martino and he did live in both Chicago and Pennsylvania and did also serve in the military. This information helps a lot!

hi, by ship's manifest really, Sabino was born in General Roca, Rio Negro, Argentina from italian parents emigrated in this country, and after they back in Italy, so the birth registration in Perosa Canavese of Sabino born in Argentina it must be in some year between 1900-1922..
the confusion abt Perosa Argentina and Perosa Canavese, it is because really exist Perosa Argentina in Italy, and Sabino declared on the naturalization that he was born in Argentina and this is true, but by memory you knew that coming from Perosa, so thinking Perosa Argentina as birthplace..
no Sabino Roppolo was born on 10th nov 1900 in General Roca, Rio Negro, Argentina from italians of Perosa Canavese IT; back in Italy the parents registered the Sabino foreign birth in Perosa Canavese also...
That is true because the ship's manifest was made by passport showing right birthplace and also Sabino on the naturalization declared Argentina country as birthplace; but he was only born in Argentina...
so Martino Roppolo was the brother... it is right...
I wish show Martin Roppolo picture by passport:
Image

Now for the military document of Sabino Roppolo you can write in italian language in Torino Archive of State asking, for family genealogy use:

"Foglio Matricolare di ROPPOLO Sabino italiano nato il 10 Novembre 1900 a General Roca(Argentina) ma residente a Perosa Canavese"

sending a email to as-to @ beniculturali.it
(NO Spaces)
when they find it they will let you know abt the fee ( in euro) and you must send it; after that they receiving the payment you will receive the military document...
regards,
suanj

However it are 2 Martino Roppolo both born in Perosa Canavese; one on 22 Nov 1892 (see above) and one born on 1 May 1890 and lived in Chicago.. now I know not the right Martino Roppolo brother of your Sabino.. both the birthyears are very close,

maybe the right brother of your Sabino is the oldest Martino born on 1 May 1890 lived in Chicago in 1930 census, cook... seeming that match better... :D

Yes, I think it's the older Martino from the 1930 census. I believe this is the birth order of all the siblings:

Martha Roppolo 1881
Martino Roppolo 1890
Domenico Roppolo 1894
Savino (Sabino) Roppolo 1900

As far as I know, there were only the 4 siblings.

Thank you! I am so grateful for all your help. Hopefully, when I am done with my research I can take the old photos I have and create a photo book for my family. The photos are very deteriorated. I've already begun scanning them into the computer in case they completely deteriorate!
