Hi Suanj,

I don't have a subscription to that data base, but I am going to the library this morning and will check it in there. I will post what I find later this afternoon for you.

Hi Suanj,

He married in 1877. Is it known if his United States military service was before or after his marriage? There are pension indexes at the National Archives. The ones I have used are organized by the war served in.

Ancestory.com has the Civil War Pensions in a data base (mostly Union solders I believe)

Do you have an approximate date of birth for Leonardo? That would help narrow down his miltary service dates.

I am not sure if this is the type of record you are looking for. These records may have the name "Leonardo" but not the name Covatta... there are many records like this. This feature of Ancestry com is one I would be careful of... only because it scans many documents that have the first name and sometimes the surname.

Hi all:

about this search for Paul friend living in UK, I found something...
Leonardo Corratto (or similar version), ancestors of Paul, sure had an adventure's life...

1.Leonardo ( Italy 1841, but also sometime result born in 1845 etc...) was resident in Liverpool and was married with Philippa ( Italy 1837), unknown surname;
had 2 sons sure: James (birth 1871) and George;

2.for some unknown cause, in 1891 Liverpool census, he and the wife are listed as Joseph and Philippa SALA( on sheet are wrote with 1 L) and transcribed as SALLA...

so in 1871 sure was married to Philippa why James born in 1871!

3...but in 1877 year are an record that same Leonardo( Leonardo Corratto) marrying with Angela Luke; he declare itself widow... no other records about this...

in 1891 Leonardo/Joseph was widow, why Philippa died...

4. Leonardo Corratto aka Joseph Salla travelled many times in USA...and resident in Phila with James family... also James with family was back in Uk some thime and again in travelled in Phila...
Well after this news, I have also this other infos:

-Paul friend have an envelope of 1902 and the address is this:

1902 year: Mr Leonard Curatto (or similar)
No. 1005 So 9th Street
Philadelphia
America

5. the same Leonard in 1907 changed again the name in Joseph SALLA, and in ship's manifest was in travel grandson James jr SALLA( son of James sr) http://img289.imageshack.us/img289/4691 ... lla8oi.jpg and are this address:
819 So St., Philadelphia, PA
also Joseph result US citizen..

6. Also Paul friend sended me the ID book of James sr wife: Margaret; Margaret CORRATTA(aka SALLA) nee Clarke, english ID book 2 Oct 1918 N° 361650; for some other cause, also Margaret in 1918 again with Corratta surname and resident in:

92 or 72 Bond Street
Philadelphia, PA

and previous address was:
135 Orrill(or Arrill) road
Philadelphia, PA

here are ID book pictures:
1 page http://matera.site.voila.fr/Corratta_ma ... _book1.jpg
2 page http://matera.site.voila.fr/Corratta_ma ... _book2.jpg
3 page http://matera.site.voila.fr/Corratta_ma ... _book3.jpg
4 page http://matera.site.voila.fr/Corratta_ma ... _book5.jpg

I cannot find other records helpful on exact italian spelling of surname....

7. Another record: in 1913 Mary Salla, daughter of James sr and Margaret( and sister of James jr) came in USA , this is first page of ship's manifest
http://img135.imageshack.us/img135/2629 ... adijam.jpg
and this is the second page:
http://img135.imageshack.us/img135/2973 ... dijam1.jpg

in 1913 the Mary's relatives was in Liverpool(James sr and Margaret)
Mary joining Brassie Pintel in Hammonton, NJ; in fact are some link in Hammonton, and paul say me that the surname of parents in Hammonton was PINTO, most probable changed in Pintel...no other infos about this....
also George son of Leonardo/Joseph, came in Philadelphia, and after Corratto and Salla surnames, George become George BERRY... Paul say me that most probable Leonardo had also other child, we remember George, James sr, Rosy(Rosa) and Mary no other data about this sisters....sure still exist some descendant, why an parent of George Corratto/Salla/BERRY last( grandson?) in WWII came in UK and visited the relatives.....

8. So the placename in link are: Italy, Liverpool, Philadelphia, Hammonton..; the surnames are: Corratto/a and similar, Sala/Salla, and BERRY last...

My problem in fact is Corratto/Corratta/Curotto etc spelling..

otherwise I cannot find the italian birthplace...

9. so I think that perhaps from some Phila's directory (1902/1907/1918) is possible to read the surname spelling, finding this mentioned addresses? or from Margaret job etc......
Someone can help me and Paul?
Thanks, suanj
