Searching for birth and marriage certificates

Over 25 million Italians have emigrated between 1861 and 1960 with a migration boom between 1871 and 1915 when over 13,5 million emigrants left the country for European and overseas destinations.

Searching for birth and marriage certificates

Postby christinalynn » 01 Apr 2013, 14:27

Hello!

I'm looking for my great grandparents' birth and marriage certificates and am not sure what commune to write to.
On my grandfather's birth certificate (from the US) his parents both wrote that they were from Trivina, Italy. Does anyone know where this is or how to find out? Oddly Google maps doesn't show it and I can't find much else online.

Many thanks in advance!!

Hi Christinalynn :-)

Possibly it is Trivigno, comune of Trivigno, Potenza, Basilicata ?

Do you have the arrival manifest for your GGPs? That may identify their place of origin.

Hi!

Thanks so much for the reply! I also thought it might be that, but there are also places called:
Trivino Province of Como, Italy
Trevina, Firenze
Trevina, Toscano (the latter two aren't on google maps but seem to be in some Italian civil records).

I don't have the manifest, but I do have his arrival date and know he didn't come through Ellis Island. I found his arrival date on his naturalization form, but am not sure how to track down the port of entry with this info.
Any ideas?
Thanks again, it is so helpful!

Hi!

Lovely, thanks.
I know his name to be Nicholas Casurella. Although I have seen it listed on various forms like this:

Nicholas Casurella (death certificate)
Nicholas Casurello (on his US census form from 1940)
Nicola Casuriello (on his naturalization form)
Nicola Carosiello (I am pretty sure this is him on a passenger list on a ship from Naples to the US).

Thank you so much! I am very grateful.

If he sailed from Naples, it is likely that he was from Southern Italy.

Wow, Suanj

This brought tears to my eyes. I've been searching for this information for years, and you found it so quickly! It is incredible how the surname changed over the years. Anna (my great-grandmother) died young, and my great-grandfather Nicholas remarried. My grandfather (also Rocco) left very young after his dad remarried and we knew nothing about any of them, so this is really gold to us. I have no words to express my gratitude!

Now, I suppose, I must just write to the given towns in Trivigno and request their certificates?

Truly so helpful, thank you so very much.
Warmly,
Christina

Hi just a correction:
the 2 jun 1906 is the date of transcription marriage note on the birth act side; but Nicola and Anna Rosa married on 8 Feb 1906..

here the marriage act: #3
Image
the surname is wrote Carusiello ...

Anna Rosa Carosiello was born in Trivigno on 28 May 1884 #41, daughter of Michele Carosiello 43 old, farmer, and of Angela Teresa Pastore, 40 old, farmer

for the certificates you can write in Trivigno:

Ufficio di Stato Civile
Municipio di Trivigno
Piazza Plebiscito 1
85018 TRIVIGNO (PZ)
Italy

Amazing!
Thank you so much!

How strange that they share a surname. Does this mean they were relatives? I always thought her name was De Grazia, or De Grassi, etc. This is on her death certificate and part of our family history.

You are very good at this. THANK YOU AGAIN! It means so very much.

Carosiello is a popular surname, so maybe they was distant relatives...
