Hey all,
I'm very new to this Italian naturalization pursuit, but in my case I've already uncovered an interesting twist: my ancestors were from Pinzolo, which used to be part of Austria until after WWI.
For more background: surname Righi, and the lineage is GGF>GF>F>me. The problem is my GGF was born in 1875 when Pinzolo (and a pretty big chunk of northern Italy) was part of the Austrian Empire. Therefore, his immigration records say he's Austrian (immigrated in 1893). From the surnames and other records (such as family first names) it is pretty clear that they were ethnically Italian.
Does anyone know the implications of this? Would the Italian consulate consider it Italy because it is now Italy.
Also, I wouldn't be able to prove that my ancestors didn't renounced Italian citizenship because, well, they technically never had Italian citizenship. This might prove to be an asset in my journey, but wanted to see if anyone has encountered this dilemma.
Thanks!
Ancestors from Austria, now part of Italy...
Re: Ancestors from Austria, now part of Italy...
for bad luck the italian law No. 379 of 2000 year( for recognition italian citizenship to foreign citizens of italians emigrated in other country, and born in italian towns under Austrian Empire) ended any effects on 19 dec 2010..

I believe that you can obtain austrian citizenship( if you are interested) by austrian law: if a descendent of ancestor born ( before of 20 jul 1919) in the territories under Austrian Empire (specifically Trento and Bolzano area; Pinzolo is in Trento province) it can obtain the austrian citizenship:

Ah, what rotten luck! Thank you for the information, though.
Re: Ancestors from Austria, now part of Italy...
I seem to recall that this deadline was extended at least a couple of times but seems to have finally expired.
Re: Ancestors from Austria, now part of Italy...
Shows what happens when you're late to the game, as I am.
From what I've read (in English, mind you) I'm not sure Austrian citizenship is possible; I don't think it extends beyond grandchildren. Even if it was, Austria would require me to renounce my current citizenship––something I'm not willing to do. I was looking for a path to dual citizenship.
So it looks like Italy and Austria are dead-ends.

It is not a effective austrian law abt that, but just a law proposal at government... and with some limit...
maybe in the next future the Italy can renew the law ...
hoping so, because it is right to give the italian citizenship at descendents of italians emigrated and born in the towns under Austrian Empire ...
