Italian Family Earnings in Brazil on 5 yr contract

Postby iolanda2 » 09 Aug 2013, 23:33

Hello,

Does anyone know what the average earnings for a family of 4 who worked in a coffee plantation on a 5 year contract during the period 1897 - 1902?

My grandparents worked near Sao Simao in the state of Riberirao Preto which had the highest coffee production in all of Brazil during this period.

Would like to know in general how much money they were able to save and bring with them when they returned to Italy in 1902.

Thanks in advance

Va bene, OK thought I would share my conclusions after consulting with a professor of economics at the university of Sao Paolo Brazil

Italian family of 4 responsible for 4,000 - 5,000 coffee plants
They are growing their own vegetables and raising some small animals and poultry to eat, living frugally and housing paid by the owner of the coffee farm

Saved amount per family per year $7 - $8 pounds sterling during period 1897 - 1902.
Paid in Brazilian currency mil-réis
1902 conversion 140 - 200 pounds sterling
1902 conversion US dollars $681. - 947.
( too difficult to convert 1902 money to lira )
2012 value adjusted for inflation
Pounds 12,900 - 18,400
Euros 14,995. - 21,292.
US dollars $17,807. - $25,438.
