Manifests to NY before Ellis Isl. 1892

Over 25 million Italians have emigrated between 1861 and 1960 with a migration boom between 1871 and 1915 when over 13,5 million emigrants left the country for European and overseas destinations.

Manifests to NY before Ellis Isl. 1892

Postby sanfilippo » 15 Mar 2005, 03:50

Can anyone direct me to info on Italian immigration before Ellis Isl. opened in 1892? I have taced everyone back to my gr.grandmother's arrival in 1896 at age 15, but my gr. grandfather came in 1886 at age 14. Cannot find marriage records here, and cannot find who accompanied gr. grndftr here.
Any suggestions?
Thanx, Tony :?: :?:

Hi,

I believe the Castle Garden manifests are before Ellis Island. Here is a link to passenger records. Scroll down to New York 1847-1897 to find info on your request.

I am actually looking for my great grandfathers records. In all honesty, I am certain that he is my great grandfather. I was wondering how I can find out who his children were and grand children, then maybe I will see if I am on the right track. He said on the Cheribon to NY NY from Naples Italy.

Hi Sainto,

Do you mean you have found a manifest with your great grandfathers name on it and you are trying to prove it is your great grandfather?

Yes, that is what I am trying to do. My father told me a little about him. I am trying to verify if I have found the correct person..

Hi Sainato,

Sometimes it is hard to idenitfy an ancestor on a passenger manifest. The more we know about the person, the greater the chance of correctly identifying the correct manifest.

Generally genealogy research is done with the known, you, your parents and proceeds backwards. As you collect the death, marriage and birth records of your ancestors you learn more about them.

Have you found the family on applicable US census reports? Perhaps the manifest has information that will correspond to the family's location on the census.

You might want to post the manifest so others can give you advice on whree to go. Details on the ancestor are needed also. Name, age, spouse, children, ect.

Let us know how you would like to proceed.

How about the name of your ancestor and where he lived in the US?

There is a Giuseppe Sainato who arrived in 1886...but his age is listed as older...and he was on the Cheribon. Hard to read, so the age could be mistaked. Reads Giuseppe fee Nice Sainato....which probably should be Giuseppe fu Nice.... Giuseppe son of Nice...or whatever name NICE should be.

If your ancestor was 15 he may not have been accompanied by anyone or maybe someone from the same town was on the ship. But a lot traveled at that time without anyone....he was old enough.

Give us the complete name and place he lived and we will see if we can help you locate his passenger arrival...or at least verify it for you.......

Sorry essgee, there is some confusion here.
My name is Tony SanFilippo. I wrote the original post, but someone replied with a new post. My gr grandfather was Michele SanFilippo, came to NY in 1886 at age 14 or 15. You combined both posts. I'm still searching.

Sorry Tony......my error.

There is a Michael Sanfilippo in Brooklyn in 1910 with wife named Rose? Is this your ancestor? Stated he arrived in 1885, I think...

Again, if you want specific information, we need more information on your grandfather. Where did he live in the US, what city, name of his wife, etc.

If the Michael above is your ancestor, for example, it would make him about 13 on arrival and this is significant...maybe he then came with his mother...and then he could have traveled under her legal name...her maiden name. This means he might be listed under a name you do not know.

The more specific information, the better. Are you looking for the ship's manifest to find out the commune in Italy he came from? If so, the manifest's back then rarely gave the town of origin, mostly just the country. And if Michele was naturalized, chances are his application paper's will give you the ship he arrived on and the date, along with the town of origin.

Any additional info will help. We don't know anything about him...only what you can share.

Yes , That's as far back as I have gotten. I can't find anything before that. From that point forward I have completed my family tree but I know nothing other than he had a brother who arrived about same time. No name though.I dont know anything about his mother and I dont know if he was natralized. I know he married Rosalia Rizzo around 1889-1900. My grandfather Antonio (Tony) was born in 1901. My grandfather married Mary Napoli In Brooklyn NY Aug 1,1926.Thanx Tony
