Pre Ellis Island.

Over 25 million Italians have emigrated between 1861 and 1960 with a migration boom between 1871 and 1915 when over 13,5 million emigrants left the country for European and overseas destinations.

Pre Ellis Island.

Postby Boberek18 » 18 Sep 2013, 23:41

Hi. I've been trying to research the history of my 2x Great Grandfather. He came to America(New York) in about 1890 which was two years before Ellis Island was founded. I'm just wondering if there were any other ports in NY or the near by area where ships would come in with immigrants.
Thanks :D Erik.

Have you checked the database at http://www.castlegarden.org ?

You can also search the Italians to America database on the National archives website-

Thank You for the websites but unfortunately I found nothing. I think it might be because his mother probably used her maiden name which I don't know. But thank you anyhow.

what specific name (first and last) are you searching for? also approximate age at arrival? maybe one of us on the forum can track down your ancestor, if we have additional info

Hey Erudita. Thank you for the offer.
His name was Carmine Morro b.1885 and came with his mother Theresa. They arrived around 1888-1891. His father left them for America several years prior. They were from Avellino.

Also his mother died sometime before 1900 and he was placed in an orphanage until he turned 14 when his father took him out so he could work.

Possible marriage record

Groom: Marra, Carmine
Date of marriage: Sep 6 1908
License# 6978 (1908)
County: Kings
Bride: DiGianni, Filomena

His marriage record might contain the maiden name of his mother.

Here is a related thread. It was already suggested that the marriage record be obtained
