Italian Citizenship Application

Over 25 million Italians have emigrated between 1861 and 1960 with a migration boom between 1871 and 1915 when over 13,5 million emigrants left the country for European and overseas destinations.

Italian Citizenship Application

Postby undertheboardwalk » 03 Mar 2014, 15:02

Hi all,

does anyone know of a situation where an individual has applied for Italian Citizenship through the consulate where they reside, but then have to leave that country of residence due to their visa expiring?

My situation is that I've applied in London, my UK Visa is about to expire yet what happens to my application when I legally stop being a resident of the UK?

Any information would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

When I applied for Italian citizenship at the Mexican Embassy, I was an American citizen living legally in Mexico with a visa. Even though I knew I would be moving to Italy as soon as my recognition was approved, I made sure I renewed my Mexican visa while I waited just in case it took longer than expected. Of course, it cost me more money in the long run but I didn't want to take any chances which could possibly result in my being in Mexico illegally.

Is your visa not renewable and if not, how much time did you have left on it when the Italian consulate accepted your application? I would think that the consulate would have or should have known that possibly your visa might expire while you were waiting for the recognition. Or did you just neglect that aspect and fail on your own to renew your visa?

I do know that in the United States, if an immigrant is applying for citizenship and then leaves the USA, his application is completely cancelled and fees paid are not refundable. But I don't know how this would work for an Italian recognition case. Maybe someone else can provide an answer.

Hi, Thank you for your reply.

I applied to the London Consulate with just over 4 months left on my UK Visa. They said that it would take longer than that to be processed but due to my situation that they would politely ask for it to be expedited - ask who I don't know. I cannot extend my UK Visa.

At the time I did ask what would happen when I had to leave the country, but the answer they gave was vague and hence my reason for finding out others experiences.

Unfortunately I don't speak Italian very well so It's really difficult for me to communicate with the officials at the consulate.

Does anyone know if the consulate you applied at is required to write to you to inform that your application has been cancelled?

Another concern of mine is actually obtaining all my documents back so that I can apply in another country.

Can anyone please shed light on this?

Many thanks

You may want to visit the consulate in person. It is possible that the processing has already been completed, and they may be waiting on the comune.

If the documents have already been sent to the comune, you need only wait for official registration, but be sure they have an address where you can be reached.

If your documents are still at the consulate, they will return them to you on request. I applied in New York with my son using his address, but they told me they would not process my application because I lived in the Newark jurisdiction. I gathered duplicate documents and submitted my application in Newark.

Several months later my son received a letter from NY saying that his citizenship was recognized. Surprisingly, I received the same letter. I went to Newark and easily retrieved my documents.

Thanks for sharing your experience mler.

Did your duplicate documents have to be originals or were they copies of the originals you had submitted with your application?

The documents I submitted in Newark and in NY were original certified copies. Both consulates returned my grandfather's original Italian birth certificate. I ordered duplicates of everything so I had them on hand.

If London has not processed your original documents, they will return them if you request them.
