Help with a possible Boston immigrant..can't find in NY

Over 25 million Italians have emigrated between 1861 and 1960 with a migration boom between 1871 and 1915 when over 13,5 million emigrants left the country for European and overseas destinations.

Help with a possible Boston immigrant..can't find in NY

Post by JamesBianco »

My great grandparents lived in Haverhill, MA. It was the typical scenario, married in Italy, one child born there, husband comes first, then sends for the wife. Could anyone check the Boston Manifests for them?
here is the info:

FRANCESCO "FRANK" FARINA was born 1884 in Catanzaro, Italia, and died 03 July 1921 in Haverhill, Essex, MA..

He married CATERINA SCALISE 1906 in Serrastretta, Angoli,Catanzaro ,Reggio di Calabria, Italia, daughter of ANTONIO SCALISE and FRANCESCA MAZZII. She was born 29 October 1887 in Serrastretta, Angoli, Catanzaro, Italia, and died 29 November 1957 in Springfield, Hampden, MA..

Children of FRANCESCO FARINA and CATERINA SCALISE are:

i. VIRGENTINA "JENNIE"2 FARINA, b. 26 March 1907, Angoli, Italy
ii. MARY FARINA, b. 15 March 1915, Haverhill, Essex, MA
iii. MICHAEL THOMAS FARINA, b. 16 June 1916, Haverhill, Essex, MA
iv. ANGELA "ANGIE" FARINA, b. 12 October 1917, Haverhill,
v. JOSEPH P. FARINA, b. 07 May 1919, Haverill, Essex, MA.;
vi. ANTHONY FARINA, b. 12 July 1920, Haverhill, Essex, MA..
vii. ALBERT P. FARINA, b. 21 March 1922, Haverhill, Massachusetts;

the 1920 Census for Haverhill, MA.
(Frank Ferino, says he came in 1906 and she in 1914)

**Also..if you want a horribly interesting read, check out what Catherine did to her husband Frank to cause his untimely demise in 1921.
I have this info up at Ancestry.com also
Catherina Scalise Farina

Thanks!

He deserved it. Hope your great-grandmother didn't do too much jail time!

No, she was released after a very brief stay in prison. She was the first woman in Massachusetts to have taken her infant to jail with her. My mother told me stories, she was never right afterward (can you imagine?)
They buried him in an unmarked paupers grave. He was a monster evidently.

Thank you so much Maria...Can't tell you how happy I am to FINALLY see this manifest. The one for Francesco would be amazing because nobody in my family can agree on his birthplace (It wasn't Serrastretta supposedly).

Im so happy!!

But wait... surely you must have seen a census?

Do you have any idea as to when he arrived?

There were a few Farina's coming through the ports of Philidelphia and Baltimore...

But no Frank... did he have any brother's??

oops.. you did mention immigration year! :oops: Hey ... we just started this search... not giving up yet... just a little too late in the evening...will look into it Monday evening.

Found a couple of Frank Farina's as "Frank Jarina" on the Ellis Database... Script "F" certainly looks a J as well... since his daughter was born March 1907... He may have entered the USA after June 1906...

Will certainly keep an eye on this one... . :wink:
