immigration to Canada

Over 25 million Italians have emigrated between 1861 and 1960 with a migration boom between 1871 and 1915 when over 13,5 million emigrants left the country for European and overseas destinations.

immigration to Canada

I'm trying to locate the immigration information for my great grand-father Baptista (or Gian Baptista) Catarinella who was supposed to have arrived in Canada in 1871. I have looked on the Ellis Island site and cannot locate him and when I tried to find a ship which arrived in Canada during that year all ships seemed to have come from the UK , often Liverpool. Did ships not come to Canada from Italy during that time period? More that likely he would have left Naples. Is there some way to locate ships that left Naples during that year as well as the passenger lists? He is not listed on the Passenger Lists CD.

I've already been to the Archives and have not found what I am looking for. Their ShipsList CD does not reference ships from Italy and does not include any Italian ports. In looking at passenger lists I have noticed names of Italians on the ships leaving from Liverpool. Is this how Italians came to Canada/US prior to 1881?

This was great information. It seems to fit although the spelling of the last name is not exact. I think that sometimes people's handwriting was not completely understood. Thanks for your help.
