Benjamin Zarzana - Grandfather

Postby italianovero » 19 Mar 2015, 19:45

I am trying to get information on my paternal grandfather. I believe he was from Palermo region. He was born around 1875-76, moved to NYC and died in July 1927. He passed away 21 years before I was born, but I did manage to find his death certificate and cemetery plot. He ran a tavern on Bergen St. in Brooklyn NY and was 51 when he died. I would like to find his birth or baptismal certificate in order to possibly assist me in achieving dual citizen ship. do not know much of my grandmother, I believe she passed away much earlier than my grandfather. Her maiden name was Mary Vicaro. My fathers name was John Zarzano, who was born in 1904. The last name was changed due to a misspelling while my father and uncle we in an orphanage on Staten Island. The were taken away from my grandfather by child services because they did not believe it was a proper environment for them, due to my grandfather being a widower and running a tavern.

Could this be your GF's family in Brooklyn in 1920 US Census?
IF YES...
It would appear that wife, Mary/Maria, was still living. Her arrival in USA stated as 1908.
All children appear to be born in New York.
Son John, your father, is age 16... and it would appear unlikely that he would be put in an orphanage at that age if Mary died soon after. Unless this is a second marriage? since a 1908 arrival for this Mary would make the births of Joseph and John in New York prior to her arrival  -

USING the first name Baldassare - located this earlier (1910) Census record

Baldassare Zarzana is a widower, age 35, residing on Delmonico Place at the residence of his brother-in-law, Franck Carcio (correct spellling could be Cascio)...
Baldassare lists his occupation as Bartender/liquor store.
