How can I trace someone who went to France to board a ship to the US?

Over 25 million Italians have emigrated between 1861 and 1960 with a migration boom between 1871 and 1915 when over 13,5 million emigrants left the country for European and overseas destinations.

My great grandfather went to France from Italy (possibly Peidmont) and board a French ship to the US (possibly Philadelphia PA). How can I find Italian passengers list from a French ship in 1859/1860?

In the section of this forum called Italian Geneaology, I posted some info in the "origins of Rocky Marciano" thread about Italians who entered the USA illegally on merchant ships from France. But this was during the time of mass immigration between 1905 and 1921, which is considerably later than 1859/1860. You might get some clues, however, from reading the thread.
