Looking for Salminas

Postby patkell » 14 Sep 2016, 06:09

Hello Everyone,

I am looking for any assistance I can get on completing my grandfather's side of the family tree because we know very little. My grandpa had a rough childhood so he didn't learn much about his ancestry. I would really like to complete it while he is still around. Here is what I know so far.

Grandfather's name: Anderson Arnold Kelley born in Las Vegas, Nevada on 05/21/1940.
Grandfather's Father: Howard R Kelley (Kelly was argued as the correct spelling back during this time among the family but "ey" stuck instead of just a "y" so it could be found under that as well. He originated in Sistersville, West Virginia and served in the Navy during World War 2. He stayed on Farragut Naval Training Base which was a temporary facility for only a few years. He passed away in 1970 as my grandpa traveled out to California to collect his belongings.
Grandfather's Mother: Amelia Salmina (very little is known about her). My grandpa said she was born in and had family around San Luis Obispo, California. He also knew that she was 100% Italian and the ancestry was linked back to Sicily. I found a record of an Amelia Salmina staying at an orphanage in Santa Barbara, California around 1930 but I'm unsure if it is her or not. Was not able to find a birth certificate for her or for Howard Kelley (Kelly).
My grandfather had one sister named Doodit Rita Kelley, i found her birth record and it only shows Salmina as the birth name. Maybe if i could find a middle name for Amelia that would dig up more information.
Any help is appreciated, I am currently using Ancestry.com to try and piece together the family tree.
Thanks!

What's your source for surname "Salmina"?
Do you know her birth date?

Grandfather's name: Anderson Arnold Kelley born in Las Vegas, Nevada on 05/21/1940.

Maybe the 1940 census that I found is right... the child was no born when the census was taken.. and so on the census, the husband of Amelia (your ggfather ) first name was Anderson (no Howard R) and now I am pretty positive that is the right family...

Really your gggfather was Howard Kelly ( I found the 1930 census) and Anderson was his son who married to Amelia Salmina, and had Anderson Arnold Kelly and Doodit Rita Kelley).
Anderson Kelly died on 1970:

Anderson F Kelly

California Death Index

Name Anderson F Kelly
Event Type Death
Event Date 24 Mar 1970
Event Place Los Angeles, California, United States
Birth Date 05 Jul 1912
Birthplace West Virginia

Gender Male

this is the husband of Amelia Salmina

I also thinked so, really she died around 1995 and her name was Lena, transcribed Zena on the census of 1930. I found a sibling also in orphanage on 1930 census, so maybe it could be ... We must to verify... I cannot find abt little Emilio Jr...maybe he was no a son but a daughter? The age matching....

Here Lena/Zena also inmate on 1930 census:
Lena Salmina
United States Census, 1930
Name Lena Salmina
Event Type Census
Event Date 1930
Event Place Glen Ellen, Sonoma, California, United States
Gender Female
Age 16
Marital Status Single
Race White
Race (Original) White
Relationship to Head of Household Inmate
Relationship to Head of Household (Original) Inmate
Birth Year (Estimated) 1914
Birthplace United States
Father's Birthplace United States
Mother's Birthplace United States
Sheet Letter A
Sheet Number 8

I don't know what happened to this family, but Lena cannot be Amelia.. they are two different persons, they was sisters. I suspect that Emilio jr on the census was Emilia/Amelia, no male but female... it is a possible explanation....
