Suggestions for what to try next?

Over 25 million Italians have emigrated between 1861 and 1960 with a migration boom between 1871 and 1915 when over 13,5 million emigrants left the country for European and overseas destinations.

Suggestions for what to try next?

Postby Vivs » 30 Sep 2016, 18:14

Hi
Trying to track down my great grandfather'(Fiorindo Benedetti)s records. We have an Italian passport, but it does not have dates of travel. It has his birth date and parents listed, but I have been unable to find him in Antenati records. I can't find him on any ships either. His passport said he was aged 16, so we know about when he traveled, (1906 ish) He shows up as an Alien in 1920 and 1930 censuses, and passed in 1936. I don't think he ever was naturalized (though he was married to a US citizen, unsure of laws at the time on such things.) Can't find him in 1910 census or WWI draft either (though his brother was registered.)
I've checked in the cities nearest to Pescosansonesco (where his parents lived and his siblings were born) but so far no joy on that front either. I've written to the local church, but gotten no response.
Any thoughts on anyplace else I can look, on either side of the ocean?

The only other clue I have is "uncle" Clemente Radochia .... The family is also in Pescosansonesco, but I have yet to find a relationship to make him an uncle.... so one theory is a biological relative... others are just missing records, or records in odd places.
It just seems strange that I find parents and siblings in Italy, and Fiorindo in the US some 14 years after arrival but so much is missing

Something doesn't match up with the passport the only child born in 1890 in Pescosansonesco to Giambattista Benedetti and Maria Grazia Del Rossi is Zolfino Benedetti he was still born and died 4/11/1890

Exactly. though I have Zolfino born in December, not april (I will double check that record.) I had wondered if Zolfino might have been a miscarriage (ie not full term?) Or Fiorindo might have been adopted? (not found a reliable way to check this yet.) I am currently DNA testing a great uncle of mine with a known great grand child of this family. (Ascenzo Benedetti is definitely in the records as born to Giambatiste and Maria Grazia del Rossi, and one of his sons is still living.)
That should tell me if Fiorindo was a bilogical child of the couple or not. But even if not, he was seemingly a member of the family by 1906 when this passport was issued.
I have yet to find a close connection to Clemente Radochia (mentioned as an Uncle in the passport.)
I have yet to find Fiorindo on any ship to the US (I do find Clemente....)
I do not find Fiorindo in 1910 US Census, or the WWI Draft. (His brother Ascenzo is in both. Oral History says Fiorindo settled first in Wakefield MA with relatives, then moved to Maine with Ascenzo.)

I find Fiorindo in this passport, his marriage in 1918, the 1920 and 1930 censuses(by 1930 he is still listed as an Alien, and no naturalization info has been found) ,and a death notice in 1936, which lists his having a sister (no idea who she was) who already passed, plus his brother Ascenzo, and his brother Vito Volpe (a foundling who we found a birth record for in Pescosansonesco, who was apparently taken in by the family)

We did find a birth record forFiorindo Radochia born about the right time, but he died at about 4 years of age, so is not the right person.

I was hoping someone in this forum might have suggestions as to where I should/could try next to find more info on him?
