Is it possible to apply for a passport via mail directly to the "Questura" in Italy? Has anyone doen this from America?
It's literally draining my bank account making all these trips back and forth to the nearest consulate to get my citizenship. Would like to be able to do something by mail!
I know some consulates let you apply by mail, but I don't think mine does...though I'll ask next time I'm there...
Over 25 million Italians have emigrated between 1861 and 1960 with a migration boom between 1871 and 1915 when over 13,5 million emigrants left the country for European and overseas destinations.

An Italian citizen living abroad and in need of a passport ( new issue or renewal ) has to submit the necessary documentation to the embassy or consulate in the country of residence.

I don't believe you can apply by mail ( see below excerpt from the Boston Consulate ) but it wouldn't hurt to ask.
"Italian citizens may apply for a new passport or have their previous passports renewed by coming personally to the Passport Section of the Consular Office with the following documents [...] "

In my experience with Italian bureaucracy, I would rather deal with any process here than in Italy.
