NORCIA IMMIGRATION EAST LIBERTY ,PITTSBURGH , PA

Postby JOHNE » 26 Jun 2006, 20:36

HI:
My ggrandfather immagrated to USA in 1888 accoding to 1910 census and was naturalized according to census, I have researched the national archives in Philadelphia and Pa state archives for county records to no avail,I have searched the Ellis Island web site and the Castle Garden web site. The records at the philadelphia archives showed no record of his arriving. His name is Michaelangelo Norcia and lived mainly in East Liberty in Pittsburgh, but was also out in westmoreland county around Whitney a coal town. Where should I LOOK NOW?,he had a child to a Virginia Scrima around 1897.

Ok then...

Do you know his siblings??

There's a Francesco Norcia who also named his son Luigi...

I am assuming that Michael's father was a Luigi...?

What about a 1890 and 1900 census... did you ever locate those... ??

Immigration info could certainly be different on other census...

P.S. Italy won the soccer match against Australia minutes ago... not an easy game to watch...

In case you are not aware, the surname Norcia (which is in my own ancestral line 4 times) is Arbëresh, that is to say of Greek/Albanian origin. The Norcia's primarily settled in Sicily around what is now Piana degli A.lbanesi. There is a decent article on them here:

http://www.answers.com/topic/arb-resh

Luckily the Sicilian Church records exist far enough back (circa 1528) you usually are able to find mention of the immigrant to Sicily from Albania.

Much luck!

Maria:

Looking at the manifest again makes me wonder if that is him? What census index are you using, the one i access does not show him and i had to look on every street in eastlibery to find him by luck, you found him instantly. I can not find him in my census search, can you in the 1900 census, are you refering to the naming traditions for Louis Norcia to arrive at that conclusion for his grandfathers name. In my reading about this surname, Sicily is refered to and i read something about that Albania connection. THe only siblings i know are in the census in1910.

Maria

There dau, Rosario, was born Aug 25 1898 according to the Diocese, Louis was born in 1897 to a Virginia Scrima,I found a Marriage license and it says Michael was not married before, the license was never returned to the court house as being used, The woman on the certificate listed is same as listed in 1910 census as his wife.

Hi John,

Here are the census records for you to view.....

1900 Census

Here is the 1900 census record that vj is talking about. I too saw that one... but the children's names are different than those of the 1910... also, the wife's name here could possibly be Vincenza in this 1900 census... eyes aren't the same as they used to be... 8O

Earlier on... I had asked if there were any Leonards in your family... as the 1900 census record shows a Leonard and a Giovanni.. showing that they were from a previous marriage... the name next to Leonards name could have been his birthfathers... ? It almost looks like Domen. Palosi? Any thoughts on this? Anyone??
------------------------------------------------

1910 Census

...are you refering to the naming traditions for Louis Norcia to arrive at that conclusion for his grandfathers name.

Yes.... after seeing the 1910 census I was hoping that he named his first male son after Michaels father... (assuming that it could be Luigi)... and with that... I looked for other Norcia's that also include a Luigi son in the family line-up....

Hoping you knew any of Michael's brothers or sisters... as they could be researched...

As mentioned earlier... there was Francesco Norcia... who also had a son Luigi...

Maria:

Looking at the manifest again makes me wonder if that is him?

Are we talking about this manifest....?

Here's a manifest that didn't make the list I posted earlier...

Town in Italy is Pianella.. would this be correct?

First Name: Michele
Last Name: Norscia
Ethnicity: Italian
Last Place of Residence: Pianella
Date of Arrival: Mar 16, 1903
Age at Arrival: 38y Gender: M Marital Status: M

If this is a manifest of interest...
we could take it a bit further and find out who Guiseppe Ferrarri is since he is listed as a brother in law...

What is the full name listed on the marriage certificate? Are there any witnesses mentioned??

Maria

The name on the marraige certificate is Michelangelo Norcia. I have never come across the name Lenoard, Yes i was refering to the naming tradition for Louis. I do not know of Michelangelos siblings. Michelangelo was not married befor according to all the records i have seen.

I have found birth records from Greci, Avellino, Campania, Italy that match
these two people that you found in the 1910 Census:

Michelangelo NORCIA born Feb. 27, 1860 to Giuseppantonio NORCIA and Caterina DiSIPIO

Maria Vincenza SCRIMA (I have seen other cases in which "Vincenza" was changed to "Virginia" in this country) born Nov. 20, 1867 to Luigi Pasquale SCRIMA and Maria Luisa SASSO.

I have more information about these Greci families.
