Around and around....Lupiano history

Over 25 million Italians have emigrated between 1861 and 1960 with a migration boom between 1871 and 1915 when over 13,5 million emigrants left the country for European and overseas destinations.

Census reports can contain errors for whatever reason.......my husband had an ancestor who listed a different state of birth on each of the three census I located for him.........presented a challenge until I located his parents!!! But that's genealogy....sometimes you follow a lead and it turns out to be a dead-end.........

OK...with your help, I've taken the next steps.

I sent a letter off to Mass. requesting the birth information of my grandfather Alfredo.

Additionally, I requested any and all information the US Army may have on file.

I discovered something interesting. I have been wondering why the Army has his birth year listed as 1908 instead of 1907. Surely they would not make such a mistake. My Army friend thinks he knows why: in 1942 my grandfather would have been 35 years old, which is over the maximum 34 year old requirement. Hence, in his opinion, my grandfather lied/forged his birth certificate to state he was 34 so he could join. This is quite a revelation, as it really opened up my eyes to how strongly immigrants felt about "defending" their adopted country. If memory serves me correctly, the Allies were losing the front in late 1941, so many volunteered to help turn the tide.

Quite a story indeed! Stay tuned for more information....

Well, it's taken many, many years, but I found out a few more things.

I now know:

My great grandfather's name was Vincenzo Lupiano. His wife: Rosina Spatafore (not sure of her last name's spelling, as I've seen Spadafore, Spatafora, etc.)

Also, I discovered my grandfather has another brother: Antonio Marino Vincenzo Lupiano. DOB is August 28, 1904 Boston.

My father was blown away, as he never heard about another brother. I can't find any trace of him (death, marriage, etc.) after his birth. I don't know if he ever came back to America or died in Italy.

Anyway, now that I'm getting closer, how can I find a marriage record or birth record of my Great Grandparents? Other than rumors they were from Avellino, that's all I know.

BTW - I am tracking another story from my father about a possible link to adopted children of my great grandfather. :D

In Italy whenever a child was born close to the end of the year the father would postpone registering the childs birth until the following year so that his army enlistment would be delayed (even in peace time so that he could remain home and help support the family one more year since men would postpone getting married until after their army service.

This is most likely the reason for the birth year alteration in 1908 =Peter=

If either of them lived into the late 1930's or beyond, you may be able to obtain copies of their social security applications. These should contain their date and place of birth as well as father's name / mother's maiden name.
