Angelo Barone

Over 25 million Italians have emigrated between 1861 and 1960 with a migration boom between 1871 and 1915 when over 13,5 million emigrants left the country for European and overseas destinations.

Angelo Barone

Postby Topper » 11 Sep 2006, 18:55

I have been unable to find the name of the ship my grandfather boarded to come to this country. His naturalization application states he left Naples and arrived at New York April 3, 1883.

The Washington is the closest ship to have arrived in the time frame given.

In March of 1883, the Alsatia sailed out of Naples,

May of 1883 the Assyria......

April 13, 1883 the Columbia.........

and again May of 1883, the Alesia.

All of the above contained passengers named Barone.

Thanks Wildspirit and mfjp for all the information.
Angelo died in 1905 and his wife Carolina died one month later in 1905, ophaning 7 children. My mother was only an infant. But she always maintained that his name was Michael Angelo, although all documents that I have uses the name Angelo. So he may be listed as Michael, Michael Angelo, or just Angelo.
I have a copy of his marriage application, and his birth date is November 22, 1861. If the information on his application for naturalization is correct that would make him 22 years old. This record states that he left the port of Naples, then arrived in New York April 3, 1883.
According to his obituary he had a brother and 2 sisters that came to this country also. I dont have any names. But his brother settled in New York and his 2 sisters settled in New Castle, PA with him. I dont know if they all came over together aboard the same ship.

The naturalization application included a specific immigration date... but
doesn't mention of the ship he was on...??

Just wondering....

Hi Maria,
These are the names of the children. I might add that the boys had changed their last name to Barr because of the bigotry of the times and difficulty in getting decent employment. Both Robert and Louis served in the army in WWI. Robert returned home with a German war bride name Irma Uder.
Robert Barr:born 8/28/1893 Died: 8/28, 1969 in Chicago, Il

Louis Barr: born 9/13/1894 Died: 12/8/1963 in New Castle, PA

Mary: born 4/6/1896 Died: 3/14/1943 in Pittsburgh, Pa

Ralph Barr: born 7/20/1898 Died: 4/28/1916 in Chicago, Il

Clementina: Born 3/10/1901 Died: 5/13/1987 in New Castle, Pa

Marguarite: born 1//04/1903 Died: 5/10/2000 in New Castle, Pa

Joanna: born 10/13/1904 Died: 7/25/1904 in New Castle, Pa

Thanks again....Vince

Yes VJ that is correct. They are one in the same Angelo Barone and Angelo Birone. The name is mispelled and so are the childrens names. The dates and locale all correspond with the information that I have. He was a quaryman and was foreman at one of the local quarries. His birthdate is November 22, 1861.
