Help... Looking For BUCCINO et al Family

Postby jklsmith » 19 Oct 2006, 03:54

We're looking for information of Giovanni BUCCINO, b.c. 1835, Italy, and his son, Vincenzo BUCCINO, b.c. 1870, Italy. Dependent upon what is referenced, of what we've found, the two men arrived at Castle Gardens some time between 1886 and 1891. The Castle Gardens database references a Giovanni BUSCINO at 50 years of age and a Vincenzo BUSCINO at 20 years. Both arrived on the Devonia from Italy on 26 November 1890, arriving from Gibraltar, Palermo, Naples, and Fiume.

The 1900 US Census taken in the Town of New Haven, New Haven County, Connecticut has both a Giovanni, age 65, and a Vincenzo BUCCINO (BUSCINO), age 25. Their year of immigration is given as 1891. They are boarding with a Luigi and Raeffaela DE SHABIO (could be DE STADIO) whose eldest daughter is Giovanna. There are 4 other daughters, Carmela, Filomena, Donetta and Italia, and 1 son, Gennesco (I think...)

The 1930 US Census, taken in New Haven City, New Haven, Connecticut enumerates a Vincenzo BUCCINO (BUCCINE) living with his wife Giovannina and their (at that time) 8 sons, Giovanni, Luigi, Raffaele, William, Carlo, Vincenzo, Harold, and Robert, and 1 daughter, Elisa. Vincenzo, Sr.'s immigration date is listed as 1886.

As we have just started the creation of this family tree we have yet to locate information from the 1910 and 1920 Censuses... Has anyone a possible connection to any of the names we have found? If anyone could help us further our research we would certainly appreciate any assistance.

Thanks,

Jim (jsmith58@tampabay.rr.com)

Hello!

Heres a manifest which mentions father in law Luigi DeStasio(?)

Not sure if you have this one...

1904 Manifest

First Name: Vincenzo
Last Name: Buccino
Ethnicity: Italian
Last Place of Residence: Pagani
Date of Arrival: Dec 07, 1904
Age at Arrival: 34y Gender: M Marital Status: S
Ship of Travel: Neckar
Port of Departure: Naples

Speranza

P.S. as for the f-i-L ... the closest name I could find is DiCesario or DeCesario coming from Pagani...

Hi! Jim & Speranza,
When you get a chance
- was the 1904 manifest a 2nd trip?
- does the 1910 & 1920 census appear to be the correct family?
- do you think Luigi DeStasio (1904 manifest), Luigi DE SHABIO/DE STADIO (1900 census), and Louis Dest (1910 census) are the same person?
- Elizabeth Droto (Desto) (1920 census) Luigi's 1910's daughter?
Thanks! vj

Hello vj,

Most definately it is another trip for Vincenzo. His occupation is listed as a banker?

Need to adjust my eyes for the years listed.

The father in law's surname is what caught my attention.

Vincenzo was returning to New Haven..

Also, I am guessing, but I think the surname could be DiStasio instead of DeStasio.

Maybe Vincenzo's wife was Giovanna DiStasio.... but cannot confirm this.

As for the town of Pegano... not enough Buccino's coming from there at all.

Hi vj,

The Ellis website won't let me view the images at this time.... as I want to figure out which set of years he was in the USA.

When I tried to view another manifest... it asked me for my log in name and password.. ??

Speranza, I've noticed problems on Ellis all week.
Especially "unavailable manifests"
although your 1904 one worked for me when I
enlarged it...
Here's another one from ancestry:

What do you think? Possible? vj
possible 1888 distasio manifest
20 Apr 1888, SS Cachemire, line 417
Luigi Distasio (DeStazio?), 38
can't read country? town?

Note: Castle Garden transcription has
Port Marseilles & Naples
Last Residence Benevento

------------------
for reference Jim's original information
1890 buccini manifest
26 Nov 1890, SS Devonia, lines 67-8
Giovanni Brucuio (Buccini), 50
Vincenzo Brucuio, 20

The Castle Garden transcriptions are pretty good.. so it could be Benevento...

Line 410 on the manifest also says Benevento

Line 417 does look like Benevento too..

This Luigi DiSasio (b1850+-) .. could be his F-i-L... (old enough) but can't confirm. Can't confirm that he even is a F-i-L...

As for the 1890 manifest that Jim speaks of.. the name looks like Buscino (too bad the record keeper spilled some ink - take a look)... he's pretty good a "dotting his eyes"... but may have had trouble with this name all together.. at one point I thought it looked like "Ruscuio"

Thank you for linking those manifests!

According to this 1904 manifest, Vincenzo was in the USA from 1888 to 1904... but what we've seen is an 1890's manifest of father and son... makes you wonder whether there was another trip too... When I tried to research the manifest further, the Ellis site was really acting up!

Thanks for pointing that out vj, that is good information to know.

And I’ll try this again… in Word… so that I won’t lose my document again…

Anyway thanks again to all for the information regarding our search for the BUCCINO family…

1) Posting dated October 19, 2006, from Nuccia... The first Connecticut death Index is Grandfather Vince BUCCINO, albeit Vincenzo BUCCINO. Reference to spouse Jenn is also Jenny, who was Giovanna / Giovannina. This is the1900 Census to which I was referring. The Ancestry.com data input reference is to DE SHABIO.

2) Posting dated October 20, 2006 from VJ… All things being equal, this 1920 Census is the BUCCINO family, albeit Puccini. The reference to Elizabeth DROTO appears to be the same as Elizabeth DEST referred to in the 1910 Census, Giovanna’s sister.

3) Posting dated October 20, from VJ... This is the 1910 Census refers to the in-laws and I agree that the PUCCINOS / BUCCINOS are living with their in-laws the DESTS / DE STADIOS.

4) Posting, dated October 20, 2006 from Esperanza... The 1904 Manifest definitely includes Grandfather Vincenzo BUCCINO. I now need to start checking out possible origination points for Vincenzo. If he visited Pagani would there be any possibility of finding any civil or church records?

5) Posting dated October 20 from VJ... Answering your questions VJ, the 1904 Manifest is definitely from an additional trip; whether it was second, third or fourth I can't really tell. It appears that Vincenzo arrived in the US in 1890 and then traveled back to Italy about 1904. It appears that he and Giovanna/Jenny were married after his arrival back in 1904. The 1910 and 1920s Censuses that you referred to definitely appear to be in reference to the correct families. I have no confirmation that the Luigi DI STASIO in the 1904 Manifest is the same as the other references in the 1900 and 1910 Censuses; DI STASIO versus DE SHABIO versus DEST. I need to examine that situation more carefully. Does anyone know of any formality, where the father of the bride to be may be taking the future son-in-law back to meet the family in the home country? The 1920 Elizabeth DROTO is definitely Luigi's 1910 daughter.

6) Posting dated October 20, 2006 from Esperanza... I have no idea at this point in time, whether or not Vincenzo was a banker. Vincenzo's wife was Giovanna DESTADIO/DI STASIO. Per the current family the name was DISTADIO, but with all the changes I've seen and recorded the family name falls somewhere between DEST and DESTEPHANO.

7) Posting dated October 20 from Esperanza. I also had a couple problems with the Ellis website. They seem to have been resolved at this time.

8) Posting dated October 20 from VJ… I looked at the 1888 SS Cachemire Manifest and the reference to Luigi DISTASIO. Per the 1900 Census Luigi, Rafaela and Giovanna DISTASIO arrived in the United States in 1892. The 1888 reference could have been an earlier trip made by Luigi.

9) Posting dated October 20, 2006 from Esperanza… Again, I'm not sure about the Luigi DISTASIO information.

10) Posting dated October 20, 2006 from Esperanza... I have not come across any earlier reference to Vincenzo BUCCINO being in the US prior to 1890, and this is my first take of the 1904 manifest.

Again thanks for the support and assistance… We really are appreciative and can only extol the benefits of this website to others…

Jim Smith and Lou Buccino
