Passport Records 1925 – Present. (( How does it work? ))

Over 25 million Italians have emigrated between 1861 and 1960 with a migration boom between 1871 and 1915 when over 13,5 million emigrants left the country for European and overseas destinations.

Passport Records 1925 – Present. (( How does it work? ))

Postby Nicemusic » 04 Jul 2007, 10:28

Hi People, :)

I'm searching some information about an ancestor and I have found something thanking to Corrado & SuanJ too.
We know that this ancestor was born in italy in the 1869 and he has been naturalized in Chicago in the 1914. We know he come for some years in Italy in the 1932 with a valid passport. In the 1946 he returned in Usa (New York) and then in the 1950 he vanished.

Now Suan advised me to try to have a copy of the passport.
I have found this site:
http://travel.state.gov/passport/servic ... s_872.html

So, I ask you some advices because I would not want to blunder.

1. What type informations Can I find?
2. How to send the letter? (and information to supply...the money...etc..)

thanks,
NiceMusic.

Dear Nicemusic,

First, many thanks for that link. I may use it for information about my own father.

As for you, the section on Third Party Requests is what you want. As I read it, you have to write a letter with as much of the information as you have about your ancestor (see Section a). Your request does not have to be notarized. I'm not sure if you need to send a copy of your photo ID but it can't hurt. The cost is $60. As I read it, you don't need a death certificate because your ancestor was born more than 100 years ago. If you have a copy of his birth certificate, I would include it.

I hope that helps. Peggy M

Dear Nicemusic,

If you have your ancestor's naturalization papers, I would include those as well as birth certificate.

ciao nicemusic,

Thats an interesting question......where to get passport info, you should not have to pay a lot of money ... first I would try
http://www.archives.gov/great-lakes/chicago/

the national archives for the chicago region, they can give you a lead as where to ask. It should be handeled with the infamous FOIA form or as we say the freedom of information act. If you have to get it though thearchives, it will be a few days.... if from USCIS it could take many months. I suspect that you should be able to get it from the archives.

Have you tried the New York City online death index? Your ancestor was 77 in 1946. Perhaps he vanished because he died.

New York City online death index:
http://www.deathindexes.com/newyork/city.html

At the bottom of the page is a link back to the New York State online death indexes.

I assume you have already tried Illinois online death index.

Good luck, Peggy

Hey :)

Thanks for the answers and links peggymckee
and Corrado too.

For PeggyMckee

Thanks for the advices about the passport request.
What is the "Proof of guardianship"?

I think that the points 3 and 4 are not requested, if they say:
"The only exception to this requirement is when the owner of the passport records was born 100 years or more ago."

I think like you about the extra inforamtions like "a copy of his birth certificate" or "naturalization papers" could be a good thing.

For the birth certificate, I should call the country (in Sicily).
While for the copy of naturalization... Corrado have found "the record" in Chicago and yesterday he has sent a copy to me.

Now I should understand how and when to send off the money.
(with the letter, before, after...)

About the age :)
The age wasn't 77 but 81 (because we have discovered that he used in usa the birth date of the 1873, while in italy he used the right birth date of the 1869).
So, 81 years old. Maybe he was vanished for the reason that you said or maybe not (but it's a long story).

I think that one problem (but perhaps I blunder myself) is the "privacy".
Because we can't have access to the 1950 files. Only genealogist, I think.

For Corrado
I hope to find something on this passport, if exist!
I'll watch the link of chicago, but I have sent a mail to Nara and they answer me with a link. This link did not work. So, I have found the right one. :o

Dear Nice Music,

"Guardianship" means acting in place of a parent, e.g. if a child's parents are dead.

Best of luck finding him! Peggy M

Dear Nice Music,

I haven't used this method myself but somone at LDS told me these lookups work very well. It's a way to find your ancestor in an old telephone book.

All the best, Peggy M
