Need another set of eyes, please

Over 25 million Italians have emigrated between 1861 and 1960 with a migration boom between 1871 and 1915 when over 13,5 million emigrants left the country for European and overseas destinations.

Need another set of eyes, please

Postby luvmynonnie » 30 Aug 2007, 21:29

Hello to all :D

Would someone be willing to check the Ellis Island website and see if they can figure out a last name for me? Also, I cannot locate the page that lists the relative they were joining. So hoping it says my great grandfather, Filippo Bosco!

I did the search by using the name of Anna Bosco because I really didn't know my paternal great grandmother's first or maiden name and Anna was one of the kids on the 1900 census and it said she was born in Italy and came here in 1892.

I just cannot read the maiden name of my great grandmother. It looks like Rose Picca, Bicca, Ricca???????????

Rose is line: 531 and the kids are lines 532 and 533
Name of ship is: Olympia, arrived 7/21/1892

A little backround (hope this isn't boring)

From the 1920 census I discovered my great grandfather's name, which was Philip. I am 99.9% sure this census goes with my family because it also lists my grandfather, Jack (Jacob??) and his wife, Josephine (my grandmother) and their son Philip.

I worked backward and found the 1910 census which includes my grandfather and his siblings...apparently my great grandmother was deceased at that time.

ANYWAY, I just found the 1900 census and think it is them! Happy Day! My great grandmother was alive and it gave her year of immigration and also listed two other kids that I had no idea about. This census has her name as Rosi and that makes sense because my grandparents named their only daughter, Rose!

If this manifest goes with my family I NOW HAVE A LAST PLACE OF RESIDENCE and A MAIDEN NAME! Can ya see me jumping up and down with joy, LOL

It kinda looks as if my great grandmother and two of her children died sometime after 1900 because the 1910 census list my great grandfather as widowed. The 1920 one has him as married but I believe it's incorrect.

I once again have managed to go ON AND ON...this is just so darn exciting!

Thank you so much for any help.

Lib's manifest
1892 manifest
(only page, manifests were very brief
until the late 1890's or so)

My guess, Ricca
Appears to be the same 'R' used elsewhere
on the page :D

edit: added
Last residence:
There are several 'S. Margherita'
Best guess,
Santa Margherita di Belice, Agrigento, Sicily
based on the other towns on the manifest page:
Marineo, Palermo, Sicily
Villalba, Caltanissetta, Sicily
Valledolmo, Palermo, Sicily

Note: both Bosco & Ricca surnames
occur in the province of Agrigento

Hello, Valarie.

I agree. Lines 508 surname Ruggiero and 529 surname Rotolo both have the same cap R as do the first names Rosa which appear a couple of times on the manifest.

Lib,
If your Bosco family stayed in NYC for any period of
time, this is an outstanding free source of vital record
information. These records could contain more family
information.
The site also includes ordering instructions & a form
for ordering NYC records.

New York Genealogical Group
one example:
Surname/ Given Name/ Age Month/ Day/ Year/ Certificate
Number/ County/ Soundex
Bosco Rose 40 y Aug 10 1908 15539 Kings B200

and for ordering online

Oh, thank you so very much for checking! It did look like Ricca to me as well.

One last question, please

I checked on the LDS site for Rose Ricca and found her and it says she married Philip Bosco in the USA in 1880. So it looks like she was here in 1880 and then came back in 1882? Now, I am totally confused, LOL
I need to get out all the stuff I have printed and check dates and etc.
Whew! For some reason I just assumed they married in Italy...hmmmm!

Thank you both for checking and for the info on Sicily and the surrounding towns. You all are just the best!

It's possible that this was Rose's
second? trip...
or the information submitted? on the
LDS site is incorrect

You may want to check the children's
ages against Filippo/Philip's arrival date
