Naturalization Information

Over 25 million Italians have emigrated between 1861 and 1960 with a migration boom between 1871 and 1915 when over 13,5 million emigrants left the country for European and overseas destinations.

Naturalization Information

Postby dematteo2 » 27 Nov 2007, 08:11

Hello. I'm sure questions like these have been answered, but here it goes...I am trying to obtain naturalization records for my great grandfather, Alberto De Matteo. Unfortunately, anybody that would know anything about this is no longer living. I know that he left Naples Italy on February 7th, 1914 and arrived in New York on February 21st. He was 22 at the time. According to the 1920 US Census, he was living in the Bronx borough with his wife, Maria, and his three sons John, Pascuale (Patsy) and Mario my grandfather). At that time he still wasn't naturalized. I don't have any clue when he was naturalized or if he in fact was ever naturalized. What steps do I need to take to find this information out? Any bit of information would help. Thank you very much.

Others on this board can help you with a more systematic approach, but since your fellow lived in the Bronx, try to go to www.italiangen.org They have agreat database that lists naturalization records in many of the boroughs of NYC.

I have received Petitions for Naturalization Applications from my relatives and found very useful information if they give you the handwritten copies. There is a form if you want it e-mail me at: etobia@stny.rr.com

Here's the INS e-mail contents:
Please fill out the attached form. If the individual was not born over 100 years ago, you will need to forward either a death certificate for each or some type of information showing they are deceased, as we cannot provide copies of their records without consent.

Please make sure that you provide as much information as possible on the form to better assist us in locating records.

You can submit the requests one of three ways:

You can mail it to our office at:

National Records Center
FOIA/PA Office
P.O. Box 648010
Lee’s Summit, MO 64064-8010

Via Fax: 816-350-5785

Or via e-mail by scanning your documents in and attaching them to your e-mail.

It is unfortunately taking us approximately 16 months to process requests due to a backlog. We are working fervently to reduce the backlog but it takes time.

Thank you in advance for your patience in this matter.
