Emigration Recordss from US to Italy before WW1 ??

Over 25 million Italians have emigrated between 1861 and 1960 with a migration boom between 1871 and 1915 when over 13,5 million emigrants left the country for European and overseas destinations.

Emigration Recordss from US to Italy before WW1 ??

Postby ItalUrgoGal » 28 Jan 2008, 19:56

Are there any emigration records documented available to indicate that my grandfather John "Giovanni Battista" Cauda with his parents went back to Italy from US around before WW1 began? His parents came to US first unknown date, then my grandfather born here in 1906. I found my grandfather came back to US after 1930. I can't find any resources about his parents or my grandfather. Thanks appreciated.

Hi ItalUrgoGal and welcome to the forum.

If you can give a few more details people on the forum might be able to help.

What were the names of your great grand parents? Names of any other children besides Giovanni Battista. Where did they settle in the US (where was your grandfathr born in the US). Where is the family from in Italy (comune, province or region)

Regards,
Elizabeth

My grandfather's parents' names were Giovanni Cauda (b. 1880) and Margherita Marsero (b. 1883). They came from Turnio, Italy I believe they came to US to settle in New Jersey before my grandfather was born in Englewood, New Jersey on June 6, 1906. I have no idea about the children's names. I even asked my mother about her father's siblings (my grandfather). She has no idea either. I forgot to mention that my grandfather came alone to US later on around 1930. But his parents stayed at Italy until they died.

Please let me know if you need more information. :)

I am not so quite 100% sure about this possible manifest of Margherita Marsero, which I have seen this before. Like I said, I dont know much about my grandfather's parents & family, I don't know if my grandfather's parents married in Italy first then come to US or that possible manifest of Margherita was a single when she came here then married to my g-grandfather in US.

So are there any emigration records from US to Italy to begin with and then go backwards where they came from?

Thanks.

I believe there are records through ancestry.com, which is a subscription site, and I don't have a subscription to it.

Maybe someone else on the forum with a subscription can try to look the records up for you.

Dear Italurgogal. There are three listings in the Ellisisland website. Two are for Giovanni Cauda, born 1899 arriving at NYC on 3/7/1921 at age 22 and the other is Giovanni Cauda, born 1871 arriving at NYC on October 28, 1902 and both from Albiano (?....discussed below) The third is for Margherita Marsero, born 1883, arriving NYC on 5/22/1905 from Santo Stefano (?)

I put in the question marks for Albiano since The only town within Torino province with a name similar to the above is Albiano d'Ivrea 10010 and there is no town with the name Santo Stefano in Torinio province for Margherita Marsero but there is a listing for two towns in Piemonte region province of Cuneo which are Santo Stefano Roero 12040 and Santo Stefano Belbo 12058/

This information may or may not relate but is being offered for your review.=Peter=

Search Ship Database: View the Chicago in the 'Passenger Ships and Images' database
Port of Arrival: New York, New York

Line: 16
Microfilm Serial: T715

This man was leaving his wife Margherita Caula in Santo Stefano Roero, was going to meet his friend Michele Cerutti in Englewood NJ where he was before from 1905 to 1909....

Hello Peter,

Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner. I am still waiting to hear from my uncle to get more information about Giovanni Cauda. No luck... The first Giovanni Cauda is not right person. The second Giovanni Cauda, it could be the one but I can not confirmed until I get word from my Uncle. Also, same thing with this Margherita Marsero, which I couldn't confirm. My question is did they came to America when they were single, then later they got married and had a son, who was my grandfather. Or, did they got married at Italy then come here which has to be before 1906 when my grandfather was born on June 1906. I will let you know when I get more information from my uncle. Thank you.

Laura - thank you for helping me but Battista Caula is not the right person because I know the fact that they came to America before my grandfather was born on June 1906

By the way, how do you know if they have emigration manifest records documented Cauda family left America to return their home country Italy before WW1 began?

Hi Elizabeth

This is wrong Margeherita in 1920. Margeherita Marsero was born in Turino Italy before came to America. She married Giovanni Cauda and had a son Giovanni in Englewood, NJ. They already left America to return back to Italy before WW1 and never return to America.

Thanks for your efforts to find the info.
Michele

I believe that Laura found the correct record :
New York Passenger Lists, 1820-1957
about Battista Caula
Name: Battista Caula
Arrival Date: 9 May 1914
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1877
Age: 37

Ship Name: Chicago
Search Ship Database: View the Chicago in the 'Passenger Ships and Images' database
Port of Arrival: New York, New York
Nativity: Italy
Line: 16
Microfilm Serial: T715
Microfilm Roll: T715_2311
Birth Location: Italy
Birth Location Other: s stefano
Page Number: 136

Battista Cauda came in USA the first time in 1899:
First Name: Rattiota

Date of Arrival: Mar 18, 1899
Age at Arrival: 23y Gender: M Marital Status: S
Ship of Travel: La Touraine
Port of Departure: Havre
Manifest Line Number: 0003

http://www.ellisisland.org/EIFile/popup ... &line=0003

and in 1905:
First Name: Battista

Manifest Line Number: 0006

http://www.ellisisland.org/EIFile/popup ... &line=0006

final destination, Hoboken NJ...

I believe that this is your ancestor and the 3rd trip found by Laura is correct as a well the birth town...

abt Michael Cauda in NJ ( mentioned in Giovanni Battista Cauda trip of 1930)

well Michele/Michael Cauda was born also in S. Stefano Roero and before of 1930 he was in Pennsylvania also:
U.S. Naturalization Records - Original Documents, 1795-1972 (World Archives Project)
about Michel Cauda Name: Michel Cauda

Household Members: Name Age
Micheal Canda 51
Mary Canda 47
Joseph Canda 23
Andrew Canda 20

Mary Canda 13
all matching...

so it is possible that Battista Cauda married at Margherita Marsero in Hoboken or Englewood, NJ;
and also it is very probable that Michael Cauda was a brother of Battista Cauda..

When you say Turnio town name maybe you means Torino; S. Stefano Roero is in same region: Piedmont and Torino/Turin is Piedmont capital so by rumor it is possible that Torino was mentioned because is the capital....
