What do the marks on Passenger Lists mean?

Over 25 million Italians have emigrated between 1861 and 1960 with a migration boom between 1871 and 1915 when over 13,5 million emigrants left the country for European and overseas destinations.

What do the marks on Passenger Lists mean?

Postby Charlie72 » 09 Apr 2008, 21:45

My Grandmother arrived in 1904. On the passenger list, in the column titled "Nationality (country of which citizen or subject)" it list Italy, as did all of the others. However, in a different hand , some one wrote "2x147923 sos 12/18/42" Could this have been someone later writing the date of naturalization?

You are correct. The handwriting was done later. I believe what you're referring to are naturalization details and that the sos is likely 505. The link below should help explain the markings.
