New and could use some advice please

Over 25 million Italians have emigrated between 1861 and 1960 with a migration boom between 1871 and 1915 when over 13,5 million emigrants left the country for European and overseas destinations.

New and could use some advice please

Postby jmrc » 17 Apr 2008, 08:26

Hi-I am new to the site but I am amazed at all the great info here!!!

We are in the process of moving to Italy and just found out through this board that we qualify for citizenship. We found my husband's Nanu's naturalization papers on Footnote. According to the document he was naturalized in 1939 and my husband's mom was born in 1937 so that qualifies us as far as I can tell. (Please let me know if this is incorrect)

Info I have is
Antonino Vitrano
Born: Aug 1904 Sant E'lia Sicily
Died Aug 1981 San Diego CA
Naturalization 1939
the numbers on the paper on footnote are M1526 Petition #6265

So, what I am wondering is this-is that the actual Naturalization paper or do I have to find a different one? How and where do I do this?

Also, since I have legal residence in Hungary is it ok to use the Italian Embassy in Budapest rather than CA?

Thanks so much for your help!

You will need to get a certified copy of his naturalization papers. You should apply at the consulate that serves the area of your legal residence. If that is in Hungary, then that is where you apply.

Thank you-
I'm wondering if I could show someone the info I found and you could tell me if this is indeed the naturalization paper or just a petition for it.

Would I send away for the certified copy at the NARA address I have seen posted on the forums?

Thanks again!

I'm not too sure what footnote is. Is it an on-line archive? If so, the information is valuable only in the sense that it provides specific information about the naturalization that you can use to obtain the actual document. The consulates, however, (at least those here in the U.S.) want an actual certified copy from the U.S. government.

Yes, Footnote is an on-line archive. The certificate I found was filed in San Diego Superior Court. Do you know if I would write to them for the naturalization certificate or still write to NARA?

Thanks!
