Do I still need a no record of naturalization if...

My great grandfather immigrated in 1901 and passed away in 1905. Do I still need a no record of nat for my dual cit even though he didn't have time to become a citizen? From what I've read a person had to be living in the US for 5 years before he could file a dec of intent before 1906.
