Birth record errors, mismatch - ISO Calogero Badalamenti

Over 25 million Italians have emigrated between 1861 and 1960 with a migration boom between 1871 and 1915 when over 13,5 million emigrants left the country for European and overseas destinations.

Birth record errors, mismatch - ISO Calogero Badalamenti

Post by sbadalamente »

I have obtained all my GGF's records from Italy and New York --- ISO Calogero Badalamenti --- son of Salvatore Badalamenti and Vincenza DiMaggio of Torretta.

Records from Italy reflect known GGG- parents of GGF - -Birthdate July 29, 1888

American records of GGF reflect 3 different birthdates --- Novemeber 1 - 2 - 3, 1885

At first I thought I had the wrong person ... Thinking further -- What's the probability of another person with the same first and last name, from the same area; and with the same exact parents name?

To continue: The November birthdates appear on GGF naturalization record, census, and draft records. The date used varies but the reported address and family is precisely the same. My GGF had 8 children - names and ages all match -- Known family members including GGM, GF and known addresses all match. Birthdate of GGM and GF are a match.

I paid a service to search records in Torretta 10 years in either direction ... No other Calogero Badalamenti -- son of Salvatore and Vincenza found. GGF marriage certificate supports names of GGG - parents ... Calorgeo Badalamenti was born July 1888 per Italian records, however US records show Novemeber 1885 and 1886.

Can anyone offer an explanation and perhaps a direction? If one views this case by date alone I suspect my application for Italian citizenship will be defined. If one studies the family tree from Italy to Amercia and over 5 decades it's apparent this is an a clerical error

Hello,
maybe I did not fully understand what you say in you post, but...do your USA documents reflect Calogero's parents' names?

This not an unusual situation but, unfortunately, no easy way to solve the problem.

Your ggf may have deliberately stated an earlier birthdate in order to qualify for a job, military service, or something of a similar nature.

It is not totally unknown for two siblings to share a name. Often, if a child died in infancy, his name was given to the next child born of the same sex. It is conceivable, though rather unlikely, that your ggf took the birthdate of a deceased sibling in order to add three years to his age. It may be worth your while to check the records again. Although the odds are slim, it may be possible that a 1885 birth certificate exists.

Yes, Calogero's parents names are correct on the Italian birth record.

His parents names also appear on the church records, and marriage certificate on the USA side.

The variation is the birth date -- There are three different birth dates on the USA side that differ from Italian records

Another fact I uncovered ...

I found records on Calogero's father in law - Filippo. On Filippo's naturalization application there are two witnesses who signed --- Charles Badalamenti AND Calogero Badalamenti

I have found US records showing both a Charles and Calogero living at the same address. Could this be a brother? Uncle?

My father tells me Calogero had many brothers -- one named Caluzzi ... Don't both these names become Charles in USA?

I think they were definitely two different persons.
I found WWI Registration Cards for both:

I agree ...

What are the name variations for "Calogero" and Charles? Italian to English and vice versa ...

When I searched for my GGF I specifically searched for Calogero Badalamenti born in 1885 - 5 years in either direction. The 1888 birth year in only search that yielded a result. I am going to attempt another search

"Charles" should literally be "Carlo" in Italian.
I looked in the registers a few days ago, but, if I remember, found nothing. :-(

Thank you!

I used myitalianfamily.com to obtain the birth certificate for Calogero.

According to MIF Calogero is the only son- named Calogero- born of Salvatore and Vincenza in Torretta

I don't have clear understanding of how the records are kept or searched. Is it worth paying for another search for Carlo? Calutz?

I don't think they can find more then you can by yourself, scrolling thru the registers at FamilySearch.org
Let me ask you: do you have any document stating that YOUR Calogero was born in Torretta?

A few years are missing, but here are ten-years-indexes from 1876 to 1885:

https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1 ... cc=2051639

No Badalamenti seems to fit.
It's a mistery.
Salvatore and Vincenza married in 1871. The only children I could find were Filippo (born 1881), and then Rocco (born 1883). A lot of years without children...maybe they were living somewhere else.
