Tracking down my GGGrandfather Pietro Sabatini

Postby adamf » 10 Aug 2008, 22:32

Hi all.

I've been going over ships manifests for awhile now and am hoping some of you wonderful folks can help me out.

Here's what I know:

My gggf Pietro Sabatini came over in 1903 from Montese, Modena, Italy. He was born in 1879. His final destination was Ladd, IL. He lived his whole life in that area (Ladd, Dalzell, Spring Valley, Depue). It was a big coal mining area in northern Illinois. He came over on La Savoie on December 13, 1903. He also went back to Italy in 1908 and came back on La Provence on October 24, 1908.

He was married on November 22, 1903 in Italy (have Italian marriage record). Soon after, he and his wife Luigia Passini came to the U.S. on the above-mentioned La Savoie.

My question comes from some information contained in the 1903 La Savoie manifest. In Pietro's record, it says that he was previously in the United States for 2 years in Ladd, IL. This would make sense as his brother Guiseppe first came over in 1901 to Spring Valley, IL. But I cannot seem to find the record from when Pietro first came over. I have found a few pre-1903 Pietro Sabatinis, but none indicate the Spring Valley area of Illinois as a final destination. This would not be as problematic, but his brother's final destination in 1901 was Spring Valley, IL. So Pietro followed his brother, and in all subsequent manifests he listed Spring Valley/Ladd IL as his destination. The only Pietro Sabatinis I have found so far were going to Philadelphia or New York. Which would just not fit with what I know now.

So, I'm looking for help finding his first record, probably between 1901-1903. Although unlikely, I am open to the possibility that he went somewhere else first.

Thanks everybody.

VJ,

You are a genealogy ninja. You make it look so easy, but I can't tell you how long I looked for this.

So can I ask, how do you do searches?? Do you change individual letters and do searches?? Because Salatino did not come up when I searched ancestry.

Again, thank you so much for your help. The folks on this site continue to amaze me.

Hi Adam :D !
I used ancestry.com
NY Ships
Pietro
No last name
Birth Year 1879 +/- 1 yrs
Arrival 1901-1903

You had enough great facts to narrow down the year
between Giuseppe's arrival & Pietro's 2nd trip.
Birth years on manifests are usually pretty close.
Pietro is usually spelled correctly.
Leaving off the last name - since you couldn't find it,
I figured it was mistranscribed.
Got lucky  .
Hope this helps!

As straightforward as that search seems, it never occurred to me. But I see the logic behind it and that same logic will no doubt help me in future searches. I had never thought to search first name only, but I guess if you have the other info, you can indeed narrow down the searches.

Thanks again for all your help.
