Serafini family of Frontone, Pesaro Urbino

Postby Sarefield4 » 16 Sep 2008, 14:02

I am seeking information on my SERAFINI family.
My great grandfather, Giovanni Serafini, was born in Frontone in 1889.
His parents were Luigi Serafini and Francesca Birleffi.
Giovanni came to the US in 1905 with the Mazzoni (Valentino, Teresa, Luigi) family.
Associated family names are Lippi, Fellini, and Cavallini
He worked as a coal miner in Scranton, PA and Cumberland, WY, before moving to California and becoming an electrician.
He had several siblings that came over to the US, but I do not know what happened to them: Pietro Serafini, Clorinda Serafini, Mathilde Serafini.
After a run in with the law (he spent some time in the Wyoming Frontier Penitentiary), he changed his name to Sam Sarafield.

Anyone with info on this family, anyone with knowledge about Frontone, please contact me.

Thanks, JOHN

Unfortunately I cannot read Italian (I can read German and English.)

I do have some Italian documents for Giovanni and his parents.

I am hoping to identify the families of his brothers and sisters and anyone that might still be in Italy.
Thanks for your help.

If you wish to conduct research on the family then yiour best bet would be to rent out the civil records onmicrofilm at your nearfest FHL Mormon library for BMD's in that town from 1810-1900. Bring along book Discovering Your Italian Ancestors by Lynn Nelson and a magfnifying glass.

Also if you wish to see if there are any current residents with Serafini surname go to www.pagineboanche.it and put in surname in first line and Frontone in second line and click CERCA.

Anhy further questions? Please let us know. =Peter=

You also requested some information about Frontone and for starters you can go to www.comuni.it and put in Fronte and there is a little movie blog about frobntone onthe left side abvout the town whichlooks charming and there is also a map for location guidance.

It seems strange that two people with the same first and last names from Italy and Austria would be travelling to the USA from Italy and South Africa one year apart???=Peter

Thanks for all your help and suggestions.

Yes, that is the correct Ellis Island transcript for my g-gf.
He was only 16 when he came over, and to my knowledge, he never returned home (he lived to be 88).
[I can see Ellis Island and Liberty Island from the shore in Brooklyn near my home. ]

I know he was accompanied by people (maybe a married sister? Teresa Mazzoni) on the journey over, and was supposedly joining a sister in Scranton PA, I think he had a brother Pietro that came over but returned, otherwise I do not know what happened to any of them.

Giovanni Serafini eventually changed his name to Sam Sarafield. Perhaps his Italian family rejected him because of this name-change affront?

What can you recommend I do to find records of the siblings of Giovanni/Sam and their living descendants?

This is the best way to conduct your research...
You can find a Family History center near your house :

http://www.familysearch.org/eng/library ... et_fhc.asp

and ask to rent the microfilms about Frontone:

Topic Italy, Pesaro e Urbino, Frontone - Civil registration

Titles Registri dello stato civile, 1810-1910 Frontone (Pesaro e Urbino). Ufficio dello stato civile

especially this can be useful:

Nati 1866-1910 -- Pubblicazioni 1866-1910
FHL INTL
Film 2017219
Items 2 - 3

Born from 1866 to 1910.. you will find Giovanni and as you know his parents names you'll be able to find other sibilings....

However, on the site : http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse. ... st=40&so=3

I found a 1902 arrival manifest for Matilde Serafini (arrival in New York but from the database: Canadian Passenger lists: 1865-1935), unfortunately I don't have the full subscription so it's impossible for me to read the manifest...
Is there any other member who can help posting the manifest??
Do you think the manifest I posted about Pietro could be correct for Giovanni's brother? And if it's so, the last name Sciamanna remember something?

Hi Laura!
I don't see a 1902 manifest, there are 2 for 1920.

Thank you very much Valarie!

so... she's not the right Matilde.... I can't find the arrival for Giovanni's sisters...
In 1905 he was joining his sister Matilde so there must be an arrival for her before 1905.... :?

My husband's family is from Frontone and I have spent much of the last few years researching the Giuliacci line. I have rented all the microfilms from the Mormon church and have a lot of information that you are looking for. I have Serafinis in my database, but not Giovanni. But Frontone is such a small town and kinda secluded, so most of the people I have found in Frontone's history are related to us in some way. I see all these posts were done last year, so I don't know what you have found since then, but please contact me if you would like further information. egiuliacci@gmail.com
