FAMILY TREE MAKERS

Postby carmine1917 » 23 Sep 2008, 03:37

Someone insisted that Legacy is the best. I know I am good with the computer, but this program is difficult. Any suggestions for a good family tree maker would be helpful.

It's truly about preference....I use two programs, one for my husbands
family and one for mine.

I use FTM, available at ancestry.com,
and also the free PAF from the Lds, which can be downloaded from their site.

I have found both of these easy to use, and I am no computer whiz!!!

I personally love my old copy of Borderbound Family Tree Maker (version 5!), but am really sorry that it does not have a few added pieces of functionality.

I understand the later versions of FTM work in basically the same way, and as an added bonus, you get a free subscription to Ancestry.com, and your family records get imports from their site when ever possible...

Don't know if that's true or not, but it would be worth it to give my family tree a good shake...

I enjoy using Legacy. It allows you to sort the children in order of birth no matter what order you input the information. I also like the book features of the program. You can choose a person and have it print out that persons family line.

Family Tree Maker is easier, but less features.

Debbie can I use a family tree maker just to insert copies of medieval documents and tracts and printed parts of books along with heraldic information. I only have names of selected personalities leaving non essential persons just bearing names deleted. =Peter=

I have been looking for a good one too. It is frustrating, I know the bigger bookstores have software you can purchase and also ledgers to write in ( I like having both ( something tacticle I could put my hands on and a repository to save all my info in)

I believe that Legacy is one of the best choices.

I know of many Vista users that have Legacy up and running.
