Palermo Marriages Index, 1820 to 1895

Postby HughTornabene » 10 Oct 2008, 00:00

Attached, is the complete index of marriages for the City (not the Province) of Palermo for 1876 to 1885.
This Microsoft EXCEL table can be readily and quickly sorted on any column or columns.
Column one is in good shape. When searching in other columns, like the right-most one (the spouse), allow for spelling gitches.
Similary in column four (the mother), glitches.
The glitches are OCR (Optical Character Recognition) errors.
Like 8 = $ = S = 5 . Or a very common one, u = n . And o = e. and plenty more.
This one table holds over 90,000 names. Generating it. as is. took me long enough. Fixing the diddly errors, forget it.
I want this tabled information to have the widest availability.
The data base is dedicated to my father, Onofrio John Tornabene, who was born in Palermo.
If is is well recieved here I will add others. I think they will all fit within the 50 Meg limit

I'm not sure if this is something you would be interested in, but have you thought about having your own site?

Google Sites

I applaud your efforts, providing free genealogical records is a great contribution. :D

Hi Hugh,

how i can get the index of marriages ? have you a website? In that years my Ggf and my Ggm married in Palermo. Thank you for free genealogical records.

Best regard
I'm searching lost relatives and descendant of my greatgrandfather Vincenzo Genualdi (or Gennaldi or Genuardi) and my greatgrandmother Concetta Davola (their sons: Angela, Carmela, Antonio, Bartolomeo, Ernesto, Simone, Riccardo, Maria) went in Chicago,Ill., and New Orleans, in 1880-1920 from Sicily. Other family related : Jacobucci or Jacopucci (from Central Italy).

Hello again,
Thank you both, wldspirit and nazca, for you interest.
The idea of publishing on that Google site I greatly appreciate wldspirit and I will most certainly explore it.
Also, nazca, I do have a website on which this database, still being built by me, is available.

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.anc ... tornabene/

What I was looking for here on this wonderful site, besides additional exposure of the database, was a place that would carry it in table form. So much prettier and useful, being immediately sortable. The files are in Microsoft XCEL form, probably why my upload dissappeared.

I have already harvested the images from which the entire (1820 to 1895) database is formed, and have already written the elaborate Artificial Intelligence program that does a big chunk of the work for me. Still however, it is now taking me a long day to extract the text from each batch of 100 images (about 3,000 marriage entries). This, because I now hand edit the leading surnames, which happily, being alphabetic, change only about once every 10 entries.
I did not hand edit the earlier database sections and it shows. I will repeat them.

If you are still reading this (instead of heading out to the actual database),
I wish you good hunting

Hugh

I followed up on the suggestion by wldspirit and set up a Google Website.

https://sites.google.com/site/palermomarriages/

The same data in bigger pieces, plus, in Microsoft EXCEL form, clear and sortable.

Excellent!! I have the site bookmarked, and I hope other members will do so as well.....I'm sure it is going to become a very useful tool in our researches here at IG.

Sincere Thanks,
wldspirit
