MIlitary Navale records for WWII

Postby rodkay » 03 Nov 2008, 23:47

Hi,

I would like to retrieve the military & birth records for my grandfather, he was killed as Japanese POW in 1945 in Shanghai from the American bombing campaign. He was interned by the Japanese after the scuttling of his ship the minelayer Lepanto under the captainship of Morante. I have sent letters requesting birth details and military service to the "Ufficio dello Stato Civile" in Caluso but to no avail. I would love find out how I can retrieve Italian records for this relative of mine.

Name: Giuseppe Gnavi
Born: 1918 Caluso near Torino Italy, died 1945 Shanghai China
Parents: Father: Romualdo Alessio Gnavi 1885-1975
Mother: Virginia Maria Chiaverina 1886-1970
Brothers: Luciano Gnavi born 1913
Adolfo Gnavi born 1915

Regards
Rod...

PERHAPS YOU MIGHT TRY SENDING TO THE TOWN AGAIN AND MAKE ONE MINOR CHANGE. INSTEAD OF ENDING THE NAME WITH AN ''I'' CHANGE IT TO AN ''E''.

THAT IS THE SPELLING ON THE ELLIS ISLAND TEXT .

GOOD LUCK, J

You can write (preferably in Italian) to the Italian Navy Deopartment at

Stato Msaggiore della Marina
Ufficio Relazioni con il Publico (URP)
Palazzo Marina 4
00196 Roma, Italy

I hope this works out better for you and I urge you to write in Italian. =Peter=

Hi,
you may need additional info on his capture and detention from the Int. Red Cross.
Fill up the form, they will send you an attestation. It's free.

This is the page referring to the "Ufficio Anagrafe e Stato Civile" in Caluso. If you have sent letters you may try now sending a request directly to the attention of Dr. Aldo Carlucci to the e-mail address shown here.
http://www.comune.caluso.to.it/modules.php?name=Content&pa=showpage&pid=24&cid=9&ent=main.

Hope this helps.

The information you are seeking (both military and civilian) can be obtained directly from the Military district in Torino. The address is Corso Unione Sovietica 100, Postale 10100, Torino, Piemonte. where you can request a copy of his Registro di Leva which contain all biogrpahical and military information.

After 1870 military records are released from The Distretti Militare. =Peter=

For anyone killed in action while in Italian military service you should write to Ministero della Difese, ONORCADUTI, Palazzo Esercito, Via XX Settemembre (23A), Postale 00187, Roma, Italy. =Peter=

Letters requesting infor mation in Italy should be writtenin Italian. The requests for military records are not currently available. I expect the website to be on line within the next two weeks. That website is www.mangeruca.com =Peter=

Rod,
Corso Unione Sovietica is the name of a street. The address suggested by Peter was:

Distretto Militare di Torino
Corso Unione Sovietica, 100
10134 Torino
Italy

Dedar Rodkay I furnished you with the postale 10100 for the military district for Torino while Livio states 10134????? I assume since Livio resides in Italy he is current and that my information appearing on the Eserctio Italiano distretti is a misprint on the part of theItalian Military authorities. But in any event I am sure your lettter wil get to the right place.=Peter=
