How to Tranfer Family Tree Maker??

Postby Mardi » 18 Dec 2008, 12:01

Need HELP...

How do you tranfer FAMILY TREE MAKER to another computer?

My cousin and I are doing our family tree. She lives in another State,

I gave her the Family Tree Maker Software that I installed on my computer. Now I need to forward to her all the information that I have.

How do I copy the entire TREE and send it to her.

Thanks for ANY help......

If you are using FTM 2009 and it is the same format as earlier editions, I not have used it yet so don't know, then the instructions below will work

You can just copy the famly tree file what will end like this FBK.FBC.FBK.FBC
forward it to her and tell her to save the file to a prefered location eg My Docs on her computer.
She can then go to file open in Family Tree Maker and open the family tree file from the location she saved it.

Thank You, mahart. I will pass that along to her once she downloades the software.

So if I copy the family tree file and send it to her, when she opens the file in Family Tree Maker it will fill in all the spaces with relatives and birthdate/birthplaces.......is this correct.

Thank you for the information.

Yes, basically the file you give her is the datebase end of the software so what yuo see in your copy of the software is exactly what she will see when she opens it in her copy.

Have another question .....Mark.....In transferring the TREE that I am working on, I put it on a CD instead, then, I transferred it to my old computer to see if it would fill in on the FTM........Hooray it did..... But notice that I did not get the whole TREE. Could have been that the file was too large.......you think.

I thinking that I will send the Family Tree to my cousin, on a CD.

Thanks.....you have been a tremendous help.

Hi Mardi,
Not sure what has happened, are you copying the correct FTM file? you may have copied an earlier version of the file. The only thing I can suggest is, if you compare the size of the copy to the original file, they should be the same and your most current original saved FTM file should be the largest FTM file in the directory.
