New member looking for the surname LUNARDI

Postby Giuliano » 20 Dec 2008, 06:09

Hi,

My grandfather Pietro Lunardi from Fosciandora (Lucca, Italia) was born in 1894 and died 1972. Was married to Iacapucci (Elisabetta I think). I'm trying to find out when he got married and if he had brothers & sisters as well as his father's name.

I'll be going to Italy in August but I thought I'd educate my self in here first.

Ciao for now.

Welcome to IG!!
What research have you already done? Have you placed him or his wife on a ship manifest, which may list additional clues to follow.
By pulling his death certificate or obituary, you may be able to discover
the name of his parents, including wifes maiden name. In Italy, women retain the use of their maiden name.
Where did the family reside after immigration?

wow, thanks for the prompy reply. Let me bring you up to speed as to what I have done so far.

First & foremost I need to tell you that my father, mother, younger brother & my self were the ones that immigrated to Canada in 1967. My father recently passed away and I've been back to his home town a few times. The last time I was there I sat with a very old Aunt who retained dates of birth, weddings and deaths surpisingly well. My father had a very large family (8 siblings) and I traced them all back with appropriate dates. My dad's father Pietro is where I got stuck. He may have married twice, he may just have divorced or was a widower early in life. He may have left the country. I'd like to trace him backwards (maybe forward one day).

What my next steps are is to search church records, hospitals, and government offices...... but where? how? who?

There is a famous Lunardi born 1759 in the same home town as my grandfather. I'd like to see if we are directly related to him. I'll need to go back maybe 3 more generations. The important places in Italy are: Fosciandora, Castelnuovo di Garfagnana, Pieve di Fosciana, Pontecosi, all located in the province of Lucca in Tuscany.

The first step is done....word of mouth, old photos and Aunt Irma. Now starts the research.

One more thing... Pietro stayed in Italy till at least after his last child was born in 1936. I think his wife passed away shortly after and he died in 1972. I'll see if he is burried in his small home town this August.

Sorry, sometimes a post gets lost in the shuffle!!

I would recommend the following book:

"Italian Genealogical Records"
How to use Italian Civil, Ecclesiastical and Other
Records in Family History Research
By Trafford R. Cole

A fast easy read, but very thorough.....you'll be a pro in no time!!
And fully prepared to research when you arrive in Italy.

Family history Center has limited records for your town, but you might be able to find siblings or marriage record for Pietro.
