Asiano - Needing Help Please?

Postby Misstree » 24 Jan 2009, 02:34

Hi Everybody!

I am trying to find out "anything" at all about my Great Grandparents:

Domenico Asiano and Rosa Asiano of Asti. (both deceased)....

Any hints or tips? I would love to know of living relatives?..

Please help - I am very new to this. :)

Thanks in advance.

Welcome to IG!!

Let's get you started in the right direction!
Exactly what is your goal? To find current family in Italy only?
Or are you looking to map out your family tree thru historical records?
Where did they live after immigration? State and city if known.
Do you have a year of birth for either? Do you know when immigration took place? Do you know the names of their children and their birthyear or date?
This helps to narrow down the right family in records if that is one of your goals.

Hi Wldspirit!

I guess I am trying to find out my roots including things like what my Great Grandparents did for a living and exactly how many children they had. If any of them are still alive? Where are they now? That sort of thing.

My Grandad is still alive he immigrated here to Australia in 1951 by himself - none of his family came out here at all. As far as I know they lived in Italy, Asti and may still do?

I can't ask my Grandad much more than I already have - he just turned 80 2week ago and doesn't much like to talk about home - he misses it and gets a bit teary eyed. I would like to surprise him with some research and info.

Using the link below, I located nine results for all of the Piemonte region:

Asiano

Asti is a town located in the Province of Asti, and the Province is located in the Piemonte Region of Italy.

At this Link you will find a form letter to send to potential relatives.

Since you have both the father and mothers name, you could send for your grand-dads birth record, you would need his birthdate and it would help to know Rosa's maiden name, Italian women do not lose the use of their surname even after marriage.

Here is a link to an Interactive Letter which is sent to the stato civile office for your request.

Hi Misstree!

Another thing you could do would be to write away for your great grandfathers birth act (long form) and perhaps marriage certificate after
that. This will at least provide the names of their parents.

With that information, you will be able to order the microfilms for Asti from the nearest family history center near you since the town has the records for 1866-1915 .

The information can be found here:

www.familysearch.org

Go to the Library Tab -> CATALOG ->Place Search -> Asti and you will get a list of possible Asti. I believe it's the first one. I would post the list of films available but there are many. Not sure you will be able to find all the children's births though since they stop before your grandfather was born but you may be able to use the information on the birth act of your great grandfather to look for his siblings. That may take a while but if you don't mind looking through films, it really is quite rewarding.

Oops..sorry Lee. Didn't realize you had already mentioned writing away for the acts. I can remove this if you like.

No not all Nuccia.......
In the interest of condensing my post I did edit the post to add the links I was searching for......

I'm still getting the hang of firefox, and haven't figured out how to keep multiple tabs going as in IE.... :?

I know that Australia has a database for immigration and if I am not mistaken, naturalizations? I have yet to add all my links from the desktop to the laptop......

Yes, hang on and I'll link it.

Ok..here it is:

http://www.naa.gov.au/collection/record ... index.aspx

Its the Archive Site. I would search as a guest to make things easier. I really like this site too. You can order records on line and they usually answer quickly.

Hope this helps. :)

If you would like to orient yourself geographically about Asti which is both a province and also a town called Asti in the Asti Province go to www.nonsolocap.it and put in Asti and then click on the name for the town of Asti and then the intials AT for the provinc e of Asti. The www you se on the right is for the town of Asti which may be helpful to your grandad. =Peter=

Thanks.....

Me thinks it's time to get those 400 plus links in some proper order, easily accessed...got them on paper, but very inconvenient!!

Thanks for pitching in with the microfilm...the BEST resource available as we know!!
