On some records I see the word Don in front of someones name. What does that mean?

It is an honorific title given to Priests and to men of good families in Italy and similarly in Spain.=Peter=

"Father" as in priest.

Also as in "Don Vito Corleone", otherwise known as "The Godfather". :D

As Peter said. As I understand it, it is a term of respect, usually for the head or leading member of a family, as well as honorific for priests or monks, generally those who head their order or monastery.

It does not necessarily denote nobility, as common individuals of good standing can be so honored with it.

Examples would be Don Juan, Dom Perignon, etc.

The female versions are Donna, Domina or Dona (in Spanish with the tilda over the n).
