Looking for Grandmother OR Her Sister-in-Law (NASTASI)

Postby chardman » 12 Feb 2009, 07:51

I am looking for either Anna Nastasi or Mary/Maria Nastasi.

Anna was born in Province of Salerno, Campania, Italy about 1894 or 1895. She emigrated from Naples to US between 1908 and 1914 and most likely went to either Pennsylvania (Pittsburg/Wilmerding) or to New Jersey (north Jersey). I know she was married in Wilmerding in Feb 1915 to Vincenzo Spinelli who came to US in 1902 and went to Pittsburgh to his Uncle Giovanni Spinelli.

I also know that Anna's brother (Cono Nastasi) came to US in 1908 at age of 23. Cono's place of birth is most likely Laureana, Salerno, Campania, Italy. I think Anna was also born there.

Mary/Maria Nastasi was Cono's wife. She came to US after 1908. It is possible that Mary/Maria and Anna traveled together to come to the US, but there is no certainty of that.

Mary/Maria Nastasi......this is her maiden name? Most Italian women whether married or not traveled under their maiden surname.

* looking at Cono's manifest of November 2 1908.
he leaves wife Maria in Laureana and he joins a brother in law in
Bluefield West Virginia. I cannot make out the name of the brother in law,
but perhaps someone else can.

The name of his brother in law is Francesco Melillo. The two passengers on line 5 and 6 (Moschillo Domenico and Moschillo Cono) go to the same person and they state he's their cousin.

Livio,
Cono, although unusual and strange name, exists. It comes from a saint and I heard it before, also there is a feminine version which is: Cona.

San Cono

Nastasi was Mary/Maria's married name. I did not know her maiden name.
I have since learned that her maiden name (at least as we knew her in the US was RUSSO).

It now makes sense that the Maria Dello Russo, traveling with her daughter (Rosa) is Cono Nastasi's wife. I found them on the 1920 US Federal Census: Cono, wife Maria, daughter Rose, and another daughter (Ann) born in US. From my personal knowledge, they subsequently had another daughter, Christine.

Mary/Maria died in 1970 in Hawthorne, NJ. She was living with her daughter Christine, son-in-law Charles Ackerman, and grandsons, Charles and Roger Ackerman. I remember visiting "Aunt Mary" as a child. . .happy memories.

Ann Russo married John Chiocchi and had two daughters: Barbara and Cathy.

Rose Russo married Alfred Giannella and had two daughters: Clara and Roberta.

Thank you so much for your help and assistance. I appreciate your research efforts and the leads it has given me.

To All Who Provided Information,

Thank you, thank you, thank you. You've provided me with a wealth of information that has led me to new information.

I did not know that Cono Nastasi and Anna Nastasi had a brother, Natale, who also immigrated to the U.S. I have found him in the 1910 US Census. Both Cono and Natale were living in a rooming house on Bridge Street in Wilmerding, PA. This leads me to conjecture that Natale immigrated earlier than 1913, returned to Italy, and then came again in 1913. I'll research that one.

I've also found Natale's WWI Draft Registration Card (1917-1918). He is still in Wilmerding and his wife, Enrica is still in Italy. Given that, I suspect his wife could not immigrate due to the war situation.

I've not been able to find Natale on the 1920 US Census. . .he may have gone back to Italy after the war or he may be deceased by then. I've not yet searched the 1930 US Census for him -- it's on my list of "to dos".

I'm still looking for Anna Nastasi's immigration record. Since I know for sure that she was married in Wilmerding in Feb. 1915, she had to have immigrated before that date and was obviously, single. She was 25 yrs old according to the 1920 US Census. So that puts her birth year at about 1895 in the Province of Salerno.

Again many thanks for your assistance,
Carol

Happy to have found the right manifest for Maria.......
I did look for Anna, but located only one of interest, and discounted for one reason or another.......

Have you placed her on census with her husband? What does it say under immigration and citizenship??

1920 Census puts Anna at age 25 having immigrated in 1914.
1930 Census puts Anna at age 35 having immigrated in 1913 and she was married at age 19.

Family recollection is that she was married in Feb 1915 in Pennsylvania. This indicates she immigrated either in 1913 or 1914. I know it was from Naples. And given her age in 1920 and 1930, she was most likely about 18 years old when she immigrated.

Thanks again for any leads you might be able to provide. Incidentally, I've checked NY Passenger Lists both on ancestry.com and Ellis Island. Nothing I find seems to fit. Is it possible she came through another port of entry?
